RALLY SCORING FORMAT TAKES FULL EFFECT IN 2004-05

At its January 11-12, 2004 meeting in Indianapolis, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Volleyball Rules Committee reaffirmed the switch to the rally scoring format for high school volleyball in 2004-05, which was approved last year on an optional basis for 2003-04.

Other items on the agenda included the adoption of a standard official’s uniform for high school volleyball, effective with the 2005-06 season.  Three other changes in Rule 5 concerning officials were approved.  Two changes were approved in Rule 3 dealing with equipment.

To read more, go to NFHS 2004 Volleyball Press Release.

NFHS CHANGES IN TIME OUT PROCEDURES IN FOOTBALL

The head coach may now request a time-out in high school football, effective with the 2004 season. Previously, only a player could request a time-out.  This was one of 10 rules changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Football Rules Committee at its January 5-6, 2004 meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.

In another change regarding time-outs, a coach may now talk to any number of team members during an authorized time-out.  In addition to the change allowing the head coach to request a time-out, two other changes were made in Rule 3 regarding periods, time factors and substitutions.

The committee also approved a significant change in the exception to Rule 8-5-2a regarding safeties.

In addition to the 10 rules changes, the Football Rules Committee approved three points of emphasis for the 2004 high school season – helmet contact, substitution and participation, and properly marked fields.

To check out the entire release, go to NFHS 2004 Football Press Release.
