BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNEY MOVES TO REGIONALS

The 94th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament moves to the regional round this Saturday at 16 locales around Indiana.  Game times are 10:00 a.m., 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m.  Single session admission is $6.00, with a season ticket priced at $9.00.

 

The combined record of the 64 teams is 1087-393 (.734).  The four teams arriving for the Pike Regional at Hinkle Fieldhouse sport the best combined mark of 81-16 (.835).  The 16 teams still alive in Class 4A have the best overall percentage of the four classifications at .773 (289-85).  The weakest field, percentage-wise, is Class 3A, with a record of 259-106 (.709).  The regional participants at Triton, in Class A, have the lowest won-loss percentage with a combined total of 59-31 (.655).

 

Five teams are at .500 or lower:  Lafayette Jefferson, 10-13; Rochester, 10-12; Taylor, 11-11; Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter,10-10; and Jac-Cen-Del, 10-13.

 

Defending Class 4A champion Pike was eliminated in the Avon Sectional championship game by Indianapolis Northwest, 64-62.  The Class 3A defending champ, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, will play Brebeuf Jesuit in the New Castle Regional.  Cass, the 2002-03 Class 2A title-holder, will meet Bluffton in regional action at South Adams.  In Class A, Lafayette Central Catholic continues defense of its crown with regional play against Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter at Frankfort

 

Among the top-ranked squads, Class 4A No. 1 Lawrence North will square off against Indianapolis Northwest at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.  Tippecanoe Valley, tops in Class 3A, was eliminated by Fort Wayne Elmhurst.  Brownstown Central, the leader in Class 2A, will go up against Forest Park in the Southridge Regional.  Waldron in Class A, puts the state’s only unbeaten mark on the line in the Edinburgh Regional, with Orleans providing the opposition.

BOYS BASKETBALL MEDIA CREDENTIALS INFO

MEDIA:  A reminder that the 2003-04 IHSAA State Finals Media Credential will not provide entry into the 2004 IHSAA Boys Basketball State Finals at Conseco Fieldhouse on March 27, 2004.

 

Applications for credentials to this event must be faxed to our office.  The credential form is on the IHSAA website under Boys Basketball at 2004 Boys Basketball Tournament Credentials.  E-mail and telephone requests will not be honored.  Please provide the name of each person for whom you are requesting a credential.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS ADVANCES TO REGIONAL ROUND

The 32nd Annual IHSAA Girls Gymnastics Tournament moves to regional competition at four locations this Friday and Saturday.  Last year’s team champion, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, advanced and led all scoring at the Homestead Sectional.  The Saints move on to the Huntington North Regional.

FOOTBALL FATALITIES LOWEST IN 10 YEARS

The 2003 Annual Survey of Football Injury Research indicated two direct fatalities in the 2003 high school football season, the lowest number in 10 years and tied for the third-lowest mark in the 74-year history of the survey.  To read the report from the National Federation of State High School Associations, go to NFHS 030804 Football Press Release.

AMBASSADORS MENTORING PROGRAM INTRODUCED

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) national office, National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) have announced a partnership to introduce an innovative "Ambassadors" mentoring program that will touch the lives of thousands of students throughout Indiana this fall.  To read more, go to Ambassadors Mentoring Program.

 

BOYS BASEBALL TOURNEY SECTIONAL ALIGNMENTS RELEASED

The Sectional assignments for the 2004 IHSAA Baseball Tournament Series have been finalized and are available on the IHSAA website under Boys Baseball Tournament School Sectional Assignments.

 

The baseball season gets underway March 29, with the state tournament starting on May 31 and concluding with the state finals at Victory Field in Indianapolis on June 19.

IHSAA OVERTIME

After 10 years as the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach, at Vincennes Lincoln, Janis Hert has announced her retirement.  She will remain at Lincoln as a Math teacher.

 

Lawrence Central has named Chris Harmon as its new girls soccer coach.

 

Matt Owens is the new athletic director at Southwestern (Hanover). 

 

Jim Ledbetter has announced his retirement as wrestling coach at Warren Central.

 

After three seasons, Heritage boys basketball coach John Hohnstreiter has resigned his position.

 

Lafayette Central Catholic has announced that George Adeyemi has been named girls tennis coach.  He replaces Nathan Rubendall.  Also, Kim White, girls basketball coach, and Brian Jones, boys soccer coach at the school, have resigned.

 

Dick Alter has resigned as boys basketball coach at Indianapolis Emmerich Manual, after four seasons at the helm.

 

Roosevelt Pulliam, who coached Gary Mann to the boys state track championship in 1991, has announced his retirement as boys head basketball coach with the Horsemen.
