BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT STATE FINALS SATURDAY

The championships of the 94th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament are scheduled for this Saturday, March 27, 2004 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

One thing is for certain as it relates to this year’s event….there will be four new teams gathering up the championship hardware.  Last year’s Class 4A champion, Pike, was eliminated earlier in sectional action.  The Class 3A defending champ, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, was knocked out of the tourney in semi-state play.  Cass, the 2002-03 Class 2A title-holder, and Lafayette Central Catholic, defending champ in Class A, both lost in the regionals.

Among the top-ranked squads, Class 4A No. 1 Lawrence North is still alive and will meet Columbia City in a re-match of their classic in the Hall of Fame Tournament on December 27, when the Wildcats won in double-overtime, 56-55.  Tippecanoe Valley, tops in Class 3A, was ousted during sectional play.   Brownstown Central, the leader in Class 2A, remains a contender and will take on Jimtown.  Waldron, in Class A, puts their No. 1 ranking and the state’s only unbeaten mark on the line against surprising Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, with ten losses on their season record.

No team has ever won a basketball championship, boys or girls, with ten losses on their record.  The previous high for losses by a state champion is nine, by Anderson in 1935 (22-9) and Jasper in 1948 (21-9).  Eight  teams have taken home the championship hardware with undefeated records:  Indianapolis Crispus Attucks, 1956, 31-0; Indianapolis South Bend Central, 1957, 30-0; Indianapolis Washington, 1969, 31-0; East Chicago Roosevelt, 1970, 28-0; East Chicago Washington, 1971, 29-0; Marion, 1985, 29-0; Pike, 2003, 29-0; and Cass, 2003, 26-0.

The combined record of the final-8 teams is 187 – 28 (.870).  Lawrence North (1989) is the only former state champion in the field.  Evansville Mater Dei was the Class 3A state runner-up in 2001, losing to Muncie Southside, 81-78 in overtime, under head coach Roger Sills.

A complete listing of all school which have won state championships is available at IHSAA Boys State Basketball Champions.

BASEBALL SEASON FIRST PITCH NEXT MONDAY

Teams throughout the state will throw out the first pitch for the 2004 IHSAA baseball season next Monday, with the ultimate goal of each team to make it to the state finals at Victory Field on June 19.  The tournament will begin on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, with competition at 64 sectional sites.  Regional play is slated for the following Tuesday, June 8, with single games at 32 sites.  Semi-state games, with four teams per site, will be played on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at eight sites.

The Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association has released its pre-season poll, which shows defending Class 4A champion McCutcheon in the No. 2 spot, behind Brownsburg, last year’s runner-up.  Norwell, 2003 winner in Class 3A, is not ranked at the outset of the 2004 campaign.  Triton Central, which grabbed the trophy in Class 2A last June, is pre-season slotted in a tie for fifth.  Tecumseh holds down the third position in Class A, as they look to defend their title.
