GIRLS SOFTBALL TOURNEY BEGINS MONDAY

A field of 357 teams will begin play next Monday, May 24, in the 20th annual IHSAA Girls Softball Tournament. This is the seventh year the tournament will be conducted in a multiple-class format, with the field, for the first time, divided into four classes.

The tournament format calls for 16 sectionals in each of the four classes. Sectional play is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 24.  The 48 sectional champions will advance to regional play -- four sites in each class -- on June 5. There will be four teams and three games at each regional site. The format calls for two semifinals games at 11:00 a.m. and 100 p.m., followed by the championship game at 7:00, where possible.

The 12 regional champions -- four in each class -- will advance to the state finals June 11 and 12. On Friday night, June 11, there will be two semifinal games in each class at 6:30 and 8:30. The Class A semifinals will be played at Hamilton Southeastern, the Class 2A semifinals will be played at North Central (Indianapolis), the Class 3A semifinals will be played at Pike and the Class 4A semifinals will be played at Ben Davis.

The state finals will be played at Carmel's Cherry Tree Complex. On Saturday, June 12, with Class A action at 10:30 a.m., followed by 2A play at 1:30 p.m., the 3A title game at 4:30 and the 4A championship at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets prices for the sectionals will be $4.00 per session, $7:00 season.  The regional tickets will be priced at $5.00 per session, $7:00 season.  The state finals will go for $8.00 per session, $12.00 season.

Last year’s Class 3A champion, Center Grove, is currently ranked No. 1 in Class 4A by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association and will play Southport in the Decatur Central Sectional.  Last year’s 2A winner, Gibson Southern, is 8th ranked in Class 3A and faces Princeton in the Jasper Sectional.  Eastern (Greentown), the 2003 Class A titlist, holds down the top-slot in Class 2A and will host its own sectional, with Madison-Grant as a first round opponent.

The tourney pairings are on the web at 2004 Girls Softball Tournament Pairings.
