GIRLS SOFTBALL TOURNEY UNDERWAY

Play is underway, and will continue through Saturday, in the sectional round of 20th annual IHSAA Girls Softball Tournament. For the first time, the championship chase is divided into four classes.

 

The 48 sectional champions will advance to regional play on June 5. The 12 regional champions will then move on to the state finals June 11 and 12, at Carmel's Cherry Tree Complex.  Tickets prices for the sectionals are $4.00 per session, $7:00 season.

GIRLS TRACK REGIONALS TODAY / BOYS THURSDAY

The 31st Annual Girls Track and Field Tournament Series moves to the regional round this evening at eight sites, with the 101st edition of the boys competition advancing to regional competition Thursday, also at eight locations.  It’s the second round of the trip to the state finals at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington on Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5.

 

DIRECTIONS:   E.C. (Billy) Hayes Track at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex is located east of North Fee Lane across from Assembly Hall and Gladstein Fieldhouse (I.U. Campus Map).

 

The lineup of regional sites and participants at each site is on the web at 2004 Girls Track Tournament Assignments and 2004 Boys Track Tournament Assignments.  For times and locations of regional competition, log on to 2004 Boys Track Regionals and 2004 Girls Track Regionals.

 

The 2003 girls’ state team champion, Fort Wayne Northrop, captured its own sectional, 165-143 over Fort Wayne Concordia.  Last year’s runner-up, Warren Central, grabbed first place honors at New Palestine, outdistancing Franklin Central 159.5-105.5.  The girls sectional results are on the web at 2004 Girls Track Sectional Results.

 

For the boys, last year’s winner, Lawrence North, finished third at North Central (Indpls.), behind North Central (Indpls.) and Lawrence Central.  The boys sectional results are on the web at 2004 Boys Track Sectional Results.

 

Admission is $5.00.  1st, 2nd, and 3rd place regional winners in all individual events and relays, plus any individual or relay team meeting the 3 Participant Standard in the regional finals of their event, will advance to the state finals.

GIRLS TENNIS TOURNEY ADVANCES TO REGIONALS

The 30thAnnual Girls Team Tennis Tournament Series moves to the regional round of competition at 16 sites today and tomorrow.  The semi-states are scheduled for Saturday, May 29, with the state finals on Saturday, June 5, at North Central (Indpls.) High School.

 

2003 state champion Carmel will meet North Central (Indpls.) at North Central (Indpls.).  Last year’s runner-up, Jasper, faces Loogootee.  Complete regional matchups are on the web at 2004 Girls Tennis Regional Pairings.

 

Media Note:  Since this is a “no admission” event, no media credential will be necessary for coverage of the tennis tournament.

ACADEMIC ALL-STATE TENNIS & TRACK TEAMS ANNOUNCED

The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has released its selections for its Academic First Team and Honorable Mention All-State Teams in tennis and track.  Those selections may be found at 2004 ICGSA Tennis All-State Teams and 2004 ICGSA Track All-State Teams.

 

OPENING PITCH FOR BASEBALL TOURNAMENT MONDAY

The 37th Annual IHSAA Boys Baseball Tournament Series gets underway Memorial Day, May 31, 2004 at 64 sectional sites across the state.  Pairings for this year’s tourney are available at 2004 IHSAA Baseball Tourney Pairings.

 

Last season’s Class 4A winner, McCutcheon, will begin play in the Lafayette Jefferson Sectional against Harrison (West Lafayette).  The 3A defending champ, Norwell, opens up defense of its title in the Tippecanoe Valley Sectional, with Fort Wayne Elmhurst as an opponent.  In 2A, the 2003 winner, Triton Central, heads for Park Tudor and sectional play against the host Panthers.  In Class A, Tecumseh will begin defense of its crown at the sectional at Cannelton, with New Harmony providing the opposition.

4A No. 1 Elkhart Memorial plays Elkhart Central at Elkhart Memorial.

3A No. 1 Hammond Clark takes on Griffith at Griffith.

2A No. 1 Glenn has LaVille as its opening round opponent at Jimtown.

IHSAA MILESTONES

 

Hagerstown baseball coach Lloyd Michael won the 500th game of his coaching career on May 19. He is 500 and 228 in 31 years as a head coach all at Hagerstown and moves into the top 15 in career wins in the history of Indiana High School Baseball.

 

Forest Park girls track coach Vicki Beach won a school record 12th consecutive sectional.

 

Jeffrey Cunningham of Vincennes Lincoln has bee selected Gatorade Indiana High School Player of the Year in baseball.

 

Former Terre Haute North softball player Megan Ciolli has been named Big East Conference Player of the Year as a member of the University of Notre Dame team.

 

IHSAA OVERTIME

Avon assistant coach Matt Riggins has been named the varsity girls soccer coach at Avon.  He replaces David Holmer who resigned last fall.

 

Joe Moehring takes over as girls golf coach at Richmond, replacing Sarah Johnson, who is retiring.  Denise Selm is the new volleyball coach for the Red Devils, stepping in for Cheryl Surles, who resigned after seven seasons.

 

Mark Peterson is the new football coach at Hammond Bishop Noll, replacing Eric Schreiber who moved on to Greensburg.

 

Warsaw has named Troy Akers as its new football coach, following the resignation of Phil Jensen.

 

Larry Parker is retiring as athletic director at Western Boone after 15 years.

 

Oren "Doc' Sutherlin will be retiring as Principal at North Vermillion effective Aug. 17, 2005. He arrived at the school as athletic director and Assistant Principal in 1971 and served 21 years in that post before being named Principal.  He has also served as a member of the IHSAA Board of Directors, including a term as chairman of the Executive Committee.

 

Darin Ward has been named football coach at Crawford County, which plans to begin a varsity football program in 2007.  He spend the last three seasons at Corydon Central.

 

Carmel has named Scott Bowen as its new girls basketball coach, replacing Jennifer Marlow, who resigned after three seasons.

 

Tim LaGrange takes over as boys basketball coach at Southport.  He moves in for Joe Cantou, who submitted his resignation after five years.

 

After three seasons at the helm, Amy Cherubini is resigning as girls basketball coach at Pike.

 

Paul Osborne, a member of the Indiana Football Coaches Hall of Fame, has been hired as football coach at Princeton.

 

Pat Rady, seventh on the all-time basketball coaching wins list in Indiana with 621, has accepted the head  coaching position at Cloverdale, after spending the last 19 years at Terre Haute South.

 

Jim Miller, the winningest football coach in terms of percentage in Mishawaka High School history and a member of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, passed away May 21 at the age of 80.

 

Elkhart Central has selected Jamelle Godlewski as the school’s new girls basketball coach.  She replaces Bill Erlacher, who offered his resignation after three seasons.

 

Former Penn and Carmel head boys basketball coach Pete Smith has been named boys basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Blessed Theodore Guerin, scheduled to open in the Fall.

 

John McGlothin returns to his alma mater at Blackford to take over as boys basketball coach.  He replaces Chris Hoke, who resigned after two seasons to accept a teaching position at Huntington North.
