SOFTBALL STATE FINALS FRIDAY/SATURDAY

Eight former IHSAA softball state champions or runners-up will be making return tripsto the state finals on Friday and Saturday, June 11-12.  Former state champs include: Center Grove (1986, 1995, 1998, 2003); Lake Central (1992, 2002); Gibson Southern (2003); and Eastside (1998).  Those with runner-up finishes include:  Center Grove (1992, 1996, 2002); Lake Central (2003); New Palestine (2003); Gibson Southern (2001); Bellmont (1989); Clarksville (2002); and Indianapolis Lutheran (2001).

-- Cherry Tree Softball Complex is located on Hazel Dell Road between 131st Street and 146th Street.  If you are approaching Carmel from Interstate 465, exit at Keystone Avenue (State Road 431).  Travel north on Keystone Avenue to 131st Street and turn right (east).  Continue on 131st Street to Hazel Dell Road and turn left (north) at the roundabout.  The softball complex is located behind Cherry Tree Elementary School on the left (west) side of the road.

GIRLS TENNIS SINGLES/DOUBLES TITLES ON LINE

Junior Sophie Grabinski of Carmel will lead the field of eight singles players into Saturday’s IHSAA Girls Tennis Singles and Doubles Tournament Series State Finals at North Central (Indpls.) High School. 

 

Last year’s singles runner-up for the Greyhounds, Grabinski is undefeated in 2004, having rolled through regular season play at 16-0 and a perfect 6-0 in tournament competition.

 

In doubles competition, Munster’s duo of Ryann Perlinski (12) and Alaina Trgovich (9) received the number-one placement.  That twosome carries a regular season mark of 12-0 and a tournament record of 8-0 into the finals.

BASEBALL ADVANCES TO REGIONAL ROUND TONIGHT

SEMI-STATES SLATED FOR SATURDAY

Only a single pair of champions from last year are still alive in the 2004 IHSAA Baseball Tournament Series, as the survivors head to regional play today.

 

Tecumseh still carries the banner of Class A champion, with the Braves set to travel to Loogootee today.  Norwell is still contending to defend its Class 3A crown.  The Knights play host to No. 4 Bellmont.

 

Last year’s Class 4A winner, McCutcheon, lost to Logansport, 7-3, in the Lafayette Jefferson Sectional.

The Class 2A 2003 winner, Triton Central, was knocked out of this year’s tourney action by Speedway, 8-1, at Park Tudor.

On Saturday, June 12, the winners from Class 4A will advance to semi-states at Lafayette Jefferson and Evansville Bosse.  Class 3A winners will head for Plymouth and Jasper.  Those advancing in Class 2A will move on to Glenn and Southridge.  Class A winners go to Kokomo and Avon.  Full tournament results are available at 2004 Baseball Tournament Pairings.

BOYS HEAD FOR GOLF REGIONAL SITES

Richmond, the defending state boys golf champ, remained in contention to repeat in 2004 as they dominated their own sectional, outscoring runner-up Connersville, 292-312.  Ben Lakoff took medalist honors with a 68 (34-34).  Last year’s state runner-up, Center Grove, continued its drive to return to the state finals on June 15-16, turning in a team score of 308 to barely scrape its way into regional play.

JULIE JOHNSON RECEIVES NFHS AWARD

Julie Johnson has been awarded the 2004 NFHS Officials Citation Award from the National Federation of State High School Associations.

 

Johnson, who resides in Alexandria, Indiana, has been involved in interscholastic officiating in volleyball, baseball, softball and basketball for some 27 years.  She has officiated in the softball state tournament seven times and the volleyball state competition ten times during her career.

 

Through her involvement with the Indiana High School Athletic Association, she has served as a volleyball rules interpreter for six years and still serves the IHSAA in the training of officials.

 

On the national level, while being actively involved with NCAA softball, she was also a member of the NFHS Softball Rules Committee and is active in their softball officials training program.

 

IHSAA OVERTIME

 

Randy Cook is the new girls basketball coach at South Bend Riley, succeeding Mike Megyesi.

 

David Stafford is the new AD at Bethesda Christian. 

 

North Posey Girls Tennis Coach Kathy Camp resigned after one year with the Vikings. 

 

Jason Mullis is the new football coach at North Harrison.  Wes Briscoe takes over as the Cougars head volleyball coach.

 

Dan Archer, who coached Indianapolis Bishop Chatard to the 2003 Class 3A boys basketball title, has accepted the boys head coaching position at South Dearborn.

 

Mike Ford takes over as athletic director at Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, replacing Rick Wagner, who resigned in March.

 

After two seasons, Marc Rightly has resigned as softball coach at South Bend Riley.

 

Kirk Comer, previously at Union City, has been hired as the girls basketball coach at Jay County.  He replaces Lea Selvey.

 

Aaron Groves, boys basketball coach and athletic director at Union (Modoc) has resigned and will become a full-time teacher at Cowan.

 

An assistant the past three seasons, Nick Middleton takes over the boys basketball head coaching duties at Cowan.

 

Scott Matthews has moved in as boys basketball coach at Clarksville, after spending the last four seasons at Austin.  He replaces Kyle Hobbs, who moved to Elwood.

 

Matt Luce is the new boys basketball coach at Benton Central, succeeding his brother, Joe, who recently resigned to accept a similar position at Marion.

 

Jeff Wisniewski is stepping down as the Lake Station baseball coach.

 

Derek Shelton has resigned as boys basketball coach at Lapel.

 

Michelle Sanson is stepping down as athletic director at Lafayette Central Catholic and will become full-time assistant principal.

 

Clinton Central has hired Mark Craft as its boys basketball coach.  He replaces Aaron Charles.
