SIX IHSAA SPORTS SET TO GO MONDAY

Next Monday, August 18, will be the official opening day for 2003 regular season competition in six IHSAA sanctioned sports. 

 

Among that half-dozen is boys tennis, with Park Tudor looking to defend its 2002 team championship following a 4-1 win over South Bend St. Joseph’s in the state finals.  Ryan Keckley of South Bend St. Joseph’s defeated Matt Zollman, Kokomo, 6-3, 6-1, to capture the singles title.  Ryan Hollander and Adam Valinetz from North Central (Indpls.) teamed up to defeat Ryan Gershman and Jon Lee of Park Tudor, 7-5, 6-0, for the doubles crown.

 

The boys team tennis tournament finals are slated for October 18, 2003.  The Singles/Doubles tournament concludes on October 24-25, 2003.

 

Boys and girls cross country will also begin competition Monday.  A year ago, Columbus North outran Carmel, 79-120, to garner top honors for the boys, with Nef Araia from Lawrence North the individual winner for the second consecutive year.  On the girls’ side, Valparaiso finished at the head of the field, outdistancing Northridge 121-127.  Carmel’s Katie Harrington was the individual champ.

 

The cross country championships for the boys and the girls will be contested on November 1, 2003.

 

Soccer team across the state will also hit the fields this week.  North Central (Indpls.) took home the winners’ trophy for the boys in 2002, defeating Fort Wayne Canterbury, 2-1.  The girls 2002 winner was Carmel.  The Greyhounds rolled to a 4-0 win over Bloomington South.

 

November 1, 2003 is the date for the soccer state finals for both boys and girls.

 

Likewise, volleyball moves front and center this week.  Wapahani (A), Muncie Burris (2A), Delta (3A) and Muncie Central (4A) are all looking for a return trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse and another shot at repeating as state champs in their respective class.

 

The volleyball teams will decide the latest state title-holders on November 8, 2003.

 

FOUR SCHOOLS APPROVED FOR IHSAA MEMBERSHIP

Four new schools were approved for membership in the Indiana High School Athletic Association at the August 7, 2003 meeting of the IHSAA Board of Directors.

 

Bethesda Christian High School in Brownsburg, Liberty Christian High School in Anderson, Trinity Lutheran High School in Seymour and University High School in Carmel will become members of the Association immediately, subject to all IHSA rules and regulations.  They will become eligible for tournament competition in two years, during the Fall of the 2005-06 season.

 

The current IHSAA full member school total is now 396, with seven junior members.

 

GIRLS SOCCER PRE-SEASON POLL RELEASED

The Indiana Soccer Coaches Association has released its 2003 girls soccer pre-season poll.  Last year’s state champion, Carmel, is ranked number one in that poll, as the Greyhounds go for their fourth consecutive state title and seventh overall.  Bloomington South, runner-up a year ago, is pre-season ranked 17th. 

 

Regular season play opens on August 18th.  The top-ranked Greyhounds will square off against Indianapolis Cathedral in their opening game in the South Bend St. Joseph’s Invitational on Friday, August 22.

BOYS SOCCER PRE-SEASON POLL RELEASED

Regular season play opens on August 18th and North Central (Indpls.) and Canterbury will meet in an early season showdown on Saturday, August 23, on the Cavaliers’ home field.

IHSAA OVERTIME

 

On August 2, Fort Wayne Carroll girls basketball coach Lisa Miller and Triton boys basketball coach Mike McBride were married.

 

Indianapolis Roncalli has named former assistant Carol Pitzer as its head girls cross country coach. Carol succeeds Andy Niewedde, who has coached both the boys and girls squads for the past two years. Andy will continue as the boys head cross country coach.

 

Dan Hyde takes over the head football coaching duties at Brebeuf Jesuit in Indianapolis, following the departure of Mark Newlin for Fort Wayne Wayne and the head football coaching position there.

 

Bonnie Bonelli has been named girls head basketball coach at Beech Grove.  She takes over for Dawn McNew who had earlier announced her resignation with the Hornets following their 2003 Class 3A state championship.

 

James Perkins, Jr. becomes the corporate director of athletics for Pike Township Schools.

 

Andy Gossel becomes the new athletic director at Covenant Christian.

 

Former Columbus North swim coach Charles “Chick” Newel passed away on August 5, 2003.

 

Jon Bemisderfer has been hired as boys tennis head coach at Elkhart Memorial.
