2003 FOOTBALL SEASON KICKS OFF FRIDAY

The 2003 IHSAA football season gets underway this Friday evening at sites across the state, with 308 schools set to participate in the 2003 football tournament series.  In the recently completed realignment process, 312 schools were placed in 40 sectionals, with four schools entering the tournament at different times over the four year cycle.

Last year’s Class 5A state champ, Ben Davis, top-ranked in the IFCA Pre-Season Poll, will open up against Indianapolis Cathedral on the Giants’ home field.  The 2002 Class 4A winner, Indianapolis Roncalli, number-one in the pre-season rankings, plays host to Center Grove.  In Class 3A, last year’s titleholder, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, leader in the 2003 pre-season ratings, opens up at Broad Ripple.  Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, the 2002 champion in Class 2A, moves to 3A and kicks-off at Fort Wayne North.  In Class A, the winner a year ago, Southwood, starts off 2003 in the top spot and hosts Eastbrook to begin this season’s campaign.

2003 GIRLS GOLF SEASON UNDERWAY

The 2003 IHSAA girls’ golf season officially hit the links on August 4, with the first poll released by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association on August 14.  That poll showed last year’s state champ, Penn, in the number-one position.  The Kingsmen, coached by Jim Garrett, finished fourth in the final rankings and captured their second state title in 2002, with a 657-663 margin over runner-up Western.  Penn also claimed the IHSAA state crown in 1994 under head coach Terry Tulchinsky, defeating Martinsville, 685-697.

In the second weekly poll just out, Hamilton Southeastern has taken over the leadership position, dropping Penn to second.  Last season’s runner-up, Western, number-one in the final poll of 2002, is placed in the third spot.  The state’s all-time leader in girls’ golf championships, Martinsville, who last took home the winner’s trophy in 2000, is ranked 14th as the Artesians go for their tenth crown, all under head coach Sharon Most.

GIRLS GOLF TOURNAMENT SECTIONAL HOST CHANGE

Mount Vernon (Fortville) has been named host of the girls golf sectional to be played at Old Oakland Golf Club on September 19th, 20th and 22nd, replacing Lawrence North, who had originally been named as host of that round of tourney play, but opted to relinquish that right to the Marauders.

Because of that change, Mount Vernon (Fortville) will move from the Hamilton Southeastern sectional to Mount Vernon (Fortville) and Heritage Christian will join the field at Hamilton Southeastern.

OPENING SERVE FOR 2003 GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The 2003 girls volleyball season began officially on Monday, August 18 with the season’s first contests.  Last year’s Class 4A winner, Muncie Central, began the season in the top spot in the IHSVC Pre-Season Poll.  Delta, coming off a title, tops the 3A lineup.  Defending champion Muncie Burris starts out in the lead position in 2A.  Michigan City Marquette, runner-up to Wapahani in the Class A championship in 2002, is pre-season ranked number-one in that class, while Wapahani moves up to Class 2A and is in the third slot there.
