2003 FOOTBALL SEASON MOVES TO SECOND WEEK

The 2003 IHSAA football season moves into its second weekend of play this Friday evening at sites across the state, with a number of changes in the poll numbers.

Changes at the top of the five Indiana Football Coaches Association polls included Indianapolis Roncalli, falling to Center Grove 27-0, dropping from the top spot to 7th this week in Class 4A, while Vincennes Lincoln moved up from No. 3 to the leadership position.  The top team in the pre-season poll in Class A, Southwood, fell completely out of the top-10 after losing to Eastbrook 39-0 and was replaced in the top slot by Indianapolis Ritter, up from the runner-up position of a week ago.

Ben Davis (5A), Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (3A) and Southridge (2A) all were winners on Friday and retained their top rankings.

Of note, Fort Wayne Elmhurst won its first football game since 1996, snapping a 64 game losing streak, by upsetting Class 4A second-ranked Fort Wayne Dwenger, 27-23.  That was the longest losing streak in Indiana high school football history.  Elmhurst is on the road again this week, traveling to Fort Wayne Northrop.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE INSTITUTE AND THE IHSAA

EMPOWERING INDIANA YOUTH TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE

The Indiana High School Athletic Association and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (CJI) are partnering to provide an opportunity to honor the young men and women who are serving as role models in their respective high schools, communities and ultimately all of Indiana.

"The IHSAA is very proud of the example our student-athletes set for their peers as well as for elementary and middle school students," said
Blake Ress, Commissioner of the IHSAA. "Teens involved in this project are an example of student-athletes in every high school in Indiana who are excellent students and outstanding role models."

Throughout the school year, athletes from 71 different
Indiana high schools and seven different sports will be featured and highlighted in posters, movie theater advertisements, and radio and television commercials. The common theme through each message is asking Indiana youth - "What's your choice?"

For more on this story and a list of student-athletes who are participating in this program, log on to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute webpage at http://www.in.gov/cji/press/2003/08-21-03.htm.

OPENING BOYS TENNIS POLL RELEASED

The boys tennis tournament begins with sectional play on October 2-4, with the team state finals on October 18 and the singles-doubles finals on October 24-25.
