GIRLS GOLF TOURNAMENT SECTIONALS TEE OFF THIS WEEKEND

The 31st Annual IHSAA Girls Golf Tournament Series gets underway this weekend, with sectional play at 21 sites across the state, all eyeing a trip to the State Finals at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin on October 3-4.  A total of 1,706 athletes representing 256 schools will participate in this year’s state championship.

The 2002 state champ, Penn, will begin defense of its title as one of 14 teams in their own sectional.  Last year’s runner-up squad, Western, will likewise host their own 10-team sectional.  Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern will host nine other teams as they begin tournament play, looking for their first-ever state girls’ golf championship.

To check the lineup of teams and course selections at all sites, log on to 2003 Girls Golf Tournament Assignments.

LITTLE SHUFFLIING IN GIRLS GOLF POLL

The top-six squads remained the same in the weekly ICGSA girls’ golf poll released Monday, with Hamilton Southeastern still the state leader heading into tournament play.  In fact, the entire top-10 had only a pair of changes, with only Indianapolis Roncalli and Carmel exchanging places

Newcomers to this week rankings included Northwestern (#19) and Ben Davis, Franklin and Zionsville in a three-way tie for 20th.  Homestead and Richmond were dropped from this week’s top-20.

2003 FOOTBALL SEASON REACHES MID-WAY POINT

The 2003 IHSAA football season hits the mid-way point this Friday evening, with action across the state. Again this week, there was some shuffling among the leaders in the IFCA and AP polls.

In class 5A, Warren Central, with a 69-0 win over Terre Haute North retained leadership spot in the IFCA and AP rankings.  In 4A, Vincennes Lincoln enjoyed top spot in both rating systems again, with a 41-0 victory at Mount Vernon.  In class 3A, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard lost its hold on the No. 1 ranking after losing at Cincinnati (OH) Elder, 17-16.  The Trojans dropped into the third slot in both polls, with Andrean and Heritage Hills each moving up a position  The class 2A leadership role remained in the hands of Harding according to both sets of voters, as the Hawks got by Fort Wayne Luers, 24-14.  There was also a change at the top in class A, with Indianapolis Ritter losing to class 2A third-ranked Speedway, 35-28, thus falling to 2nd  in the IFCA ratings and 4th in the AP numbers, with Pioneer jumping up one slot to No. 1.

Newcomers to the IFCA poll included Elkhart Memorial (5A) and Tippecanoe Valley (3A).  New members of the AP top-10 were Greenwood (4A), Lowell (4A), Tippecanoe Valley (3A), Fort Wayne Concordia (3A) and Linton-Stockton (A).

Key games involving IFCA and AP teams, which are both ranked this week, include:

                        Ben Davis at Center Grove

                        Plymouth at Elkhart Memorial

                        Andrean at Lowell

                        Heritage at Adams Central

SOCCER STATS AVAILABLE

The IHSAA has begun compiling weekly statistics for both girls and boys soccer and that information will be updated on the web each Tuesday following receipt of the material from the schools across the state.  Girls information will be available on the web at 2003 Girls Soccer Stats.  Boys information is on-line at 2003 Boys Soccer Stats.

STILL COLUMBUS NORTH AND VALPARAISO IN CROSS-COUNTRY

Another week…and the same story in the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches weekly polls, with the same schools showing the way for both the boys and the girls for the fourth consecutive week.

In girls cross country, the top-five remained the same, with Valparaiso as the poll leader, then Chesterton, Indianapolis Cathedral, Northridge and Fort Wayne Concordia next in line.

There was a pair of new arrivals in the girls’ top-20 with Lafayette Jefferson (#17) and Noblesville (#19), forcing Fort Wayne North and Bloomington North into a departure from the weekly poll.

The boys’ ratings were still being led by Columbus North.  Lawrence North (#2) and Carmel (#3) flip-flopped spots, with Fort Wayne Northrop and Hamilton Southeastern completing the top-five, in that order.

Huntington North (#18) and Portage (#19) were new on the scene.  West Noble and Fort Wayne Concordia said goodbye.
