2003 FOOTBALL SEASON HEADS TO WEEK SIX

The second half of the 2003 IHSAA football season begins this Friday evening, with gridiron action throughout the state.

In Class 5A, Warren Central, with a 71-9 win at Terre Haute South, continued as the leader in the IFCA and AP rankings.  In 4A, Vincennes Lincoln had its hands full with Jasper Friday evening, but came away with a 10-7 victory that allowed the Alices to stay at No. 1 in both polls.  In Class 3A, Andrean picked up win No. 5 and maintained its hold on the premier slot in the IFCA poll with a 21-7 win at Lowell, but remained as the No. 2 choice by the AP voters.  The Class 2A leader in both rankings is still Harding, with the Hawks getting by Fort Wayne North 48-10.  Pioneer still shows the way in both polls of Class A teams.  The Panthers rolled to a 62-12 victory over River Forest on Friday.

Newcomers to the IFCA poll included Lawrence North (5A), Bloomington North (4A), Shelbyville (4A) and Cass (2A).

New members of the AP top-10 were Elkhart Memorial (5A), East Central (4A), Cass (2A) and South Decatur (A)

FOOTBALL STATS ON-LINE

The IHSAA has begun its weekly compilation of football statistics in a number of categories.  Those stats, as provided by the schools, are available on the IHSAA website under IHSAA 2003 Football Leaders.

LEADERSHIP CHANGES IN VOLLEYBALL RANKINGS

For the first time in the past four weeks, there were changes in the #No.1 rankings in the Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association poll.  Indianapolis Bishop Chatard fell out of the coveted No. 1 position, with Mishawaka Marian taking over in Class 3A in the IHSVC poll, but stayed atop the ICGSA rankings. In Class A, Michigan City Marquette tumbled to No. 2, with Cowan moving up to No. 1, but remained the leader in the ICGSA poll.

Check out the latest volleyball stats from the IHSVC at IHSVC Girls Volleyball Statistics.

NORTH CENTRAL (INDPLS.) NEW LEADER IN ISCA GIRLS SOCCER POLL

Following their victory over Carmel last week, the North Central (Indpls.) girls’ soccer team took over the top slot in the weekly Indiana Soccer Coaches Association poll.  The remainder of the top-five remained same with Noblesville, Fort Wayne Dwenger and Zionsville.

Though there was some shuffling, no new teams were added to this week’s top-20.

The latest girls’ soccer leaders are on the web at 2003 Girls Soccer Stats.

SOCCER STATS AVAILABLE

The IHSAA has begun compiling weekly statistics for both girls and boys soccer and that information will be updated on the web each Tuesday following receipt of the material from the schools across the state.  Girls information will be available on the web at 2003 Girls Soccer Stats.  Boys information is on-line at 2003 Boys Soccer Stats.

COLUMBUS NORTH/VALPARAISO REMAIN ATOP CROSS-COUNTRY POLLS

Nothing changed in the top spots in the Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches weekly polls, with Columbus North and Valparaiso showing the way for both the boys and the girls for the fifth consecutive week.

In girls cross country, Carmel made the jump from sixth into the runner-up spot, with Chesterton falling to third and Lawrence North and Fort Wayne Concordia completing the top-five.

Again this week, there were new arrivals in the girls’ top-20 with Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (#16), Goshen (#18), Plainfield (#19) and Bloomington South (#20), forcing out New Prairie, North Central (Indpls.), Noblesville and Richmond.

The boys’ ratings were still being led by Columbus North.  Lawrence North, Carmel, and Fort Wayne Northrop followed in that order, with Valparaiso making a huge leap from 12th a week ago to comlpete the top-five.

West Noble (#17) and Lafayette Jefferson (#18) were new arrivals on the top-20 scene.  Portage and Pendleton Heights were eliminated.

The boys’ and girls’ cross country sectionals are scheduled for October 14, 2003.
