BOYS TENNIS TOURNEY BEGINS THURSDAY

The 37th Annual IHSAA Boys Tennis Tournament Series will take to the courts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 2-4, at 64 sites around the state.  The sectional matchups, as reported by the schools, are on-line at 2003 Boys Tennis Sectional Pairings.  Members of the first place teams at each sectional site will advance to the regional round of the tourney on Tuesday, October 7, and Wednesday, October 8

The defending state champs, Park Tudor, will begin competition in the Pike Sectional.  Last year’s runner-up, South Bend St. Joseph’s, will participate in the South Bend Clay sectional.  This week’s top-ranked Carmel Greyhound squad will attempt to advance out of its own sectional.

The complete lineup of tourney sectional sites and competitors is available at 2003 Boys Tennis Tourney Alignment.  Past team champions are also available at Boys Team Tennis Champions.

The 24th Annual Singles and 14th Annual Doubles Tournament Series will also begin on Tuesday, October 7 and played concurrently at the team tennis regional sites.

Ryan Keckley of South Bend St. Joseph’s captured last year’s singles title, while Ryan Hollander and Adam Valinetz of North Central (Indpls.) combined their talents to grab the doubles crown.

Previous singles and doubles state winners can be found at Boys Tennis Singles & Doubles Champions.

CARMEL AGAIN TOPS BOYS TENNIS POLL

The Carmel Greyhounds managed to hang on to the premier position in the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association boys’ poll this week, with Park Tudor moving up from 4th and closing in on them in the No. 2 ranking.  West Lafayette remained 3rd, with North Central (Indpls.) falling from 2nd to 4th and Center Grove moving up from the 7th slot a week ago to round out the top-5.

The only newcomer to the top-20 this week is Evansville Memorial (#20).

The boys’ tennis tournament begins with sectional play on October 2-4, with the team state finals on October 18 and the singles-doubles finals on October 24-25.

CHANGES AT TOP IN FOOTBALL POLLS AS SEASON HEADS TO WEEK 7

Week-seven of the 2003 IHSAA football season is on tap this Friday evening, with key games across the state…and some shuffling among the state leaders in the polls.

In Class 5A, Warren Central, with a 23-20 loss at Carmel, dropped out as the leader in the IFCA and AP rankings and was replaced by 5-1 Ben Davis.  In 4A, Vincennes Lincoln also suffered its first loss, a 20-0 shutout at the hands of Northview and lost its lofty perch at No. 1 in both polls, with Muncie Central taking over.  In Class 3A, Andrean grabbed victory No. 6 to maintain the premier slot in the IFCA poll, with a 21-0 win against Hobart, but remained as the No. 2 choice by the AP voters, who still placed Heritage Hills at the front of the line, as the Patriots knocked off Gibson Southern 42-0..  The Class 2A leader also changed, as Harding lost to Fort Wayne South, 28-9, and Speedway climbed up to No. 1 with a 55-21 win versus Cascade.  Pioneer is still atop both polls of Class A teams following a 34-0 shutout at Frontier.

Newcomers to the IFCA poll included Mooresville (4A), Fort Wayne Concordia (3A) and Mount Vernon (Fortville) (3A).  The only new member of the AP top-10 was Corydon Central (3A).

SOCCER STATS AVAILABLE

The IHSAA has begun compiling weekly statistics for both girls and boys soccer and that information will be updated on the web each Tuesday following receipt of the material from the schools across the state.  Girls information will be available on the web at 2003 Girls Soccer Stats.  Boys information is on-line at 2003 Boys Soccer Stats.

SOCCER TOURNAMENT DRAW SLATED FOR THURSDAY

Pairings for the 10th Annual IHSAA Boys & Girls Soccer Tournament Series will be determined by a random draw in the IHSAA offices on Thursday, October 2, at 8:00 a.m.  Upon completion, the pairings will be placed on the IHSAA website under both boys and girls soccer.

The 2003 boys’ tournament will begin on October 13, with girls’ action slated to get underway October 14.  The IHSAA State Finals will be held on November 1 at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis.

NOTHING CHANGING IN CROSS-COUNTRY POLLS LEADERS

The same familiar names topped this week’s edition of the Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches weekly polls, with Columbus North and Valparaiso again the leaders for both the boys and the girls for the sixth consecutive week.

In girls cross country, Chesterton (#2) and Carmel (#3) swapped spots,  with Lawrence North and Fort Wayne Concordia repeating as No. 4 and No. 5.

The boys’ ratings were still being led by Columbus North.  Lawrence North (#2) and Carmel (#3) exchanged places with Fort Wayne Northrop staying in 4th and Warren Central making the leap from 9th to 5th.

The boys’ and girls’ cross country sectionals are scheduled for October 14, 2003.
