TWO CHANGES AT TOP AT OF WEEKLY FOOTBALL POLLS

The IHSAA high school football season advances to week-eight of the 2003 season this Friday evening, with a pair of newcomers taking over as leaders in the polls.

In Class 5A, Ben Davis, despite a 7-0 victory at Lawrence North, was replaced at No. 1 by Lafayette Jefferson in the IFCA ranking system, but maintained its hold on the top spot according to AP.  The Bronchos, 4th in the AP poll, are sporting a 7-0 record, coming off a 35-12 victory over Class 4A top-ranked Muncie Central.  In 4A, Delta rolled to a 28-0 win over Rushville and took over the leadership role in both polls as the Bearcats suffered that loss to Lafayette Jeff.  Elsewhere, Andrean (3A), Speedway (2A) and Pioneer (A) all stayed in the top slot.

Newcomers to the IFCA polls included Carmel (5A), New Prairie (3A), Hamilton Heights (3A), Knightstown (A) and Perry Central (A).

New members of the AP top-10 were Carmel (5A), Mount Vernon (Fortville) (3A), Tippecanoe Valley (3A), Madison-Grant (2A) and Adams Central (A)

FOOTBALL STATS ON-LINE

The IHSAA continues its weekly compilation of football statistics in a number of categories.  Those stats, as provided by the schools, are available on the IHSAA website under IHSAA 2003 Football Leaders.

BOYS TENNIS TOURNEY ADVANCES TO REGIONAL PLAY

The 37th Annual IHSAA Boys Tennis Tournament Series began Thursday at 64 sites around the state and moves on to the regional round today and tomorrow, October 7-8.  Sectional results are on-line as reported by the schools at 2003 Boys Tennis Sectional Results.

The state’s No. 1 team, Carmel, advanced to the North Central (Indpls.) Regional with a 5-0 win over Hamilton Southeastern in the sectional championship match on the Greyhounds’ home courts.  They will meet New Palestine, a winner at Mount Vernon (Fortville), today.

Last year’s boys state champ, Park Tudor, also stayed in contention for a repeat, as the Panthers rolled past Brebeuf Jesuit in the title match of the Pike Sectional.  They will square off against Brownsburg, winner of the Avon Sectional, in the Ben Davis Regional

Members of the first place teams at each sectional site advance to the regional round of the tourney on Tuesday, October 7, and Wednesday, October 8.  Those lineups are available at 2003 Boys Tennis Regionals.  Regional results will be posted on the web as they are received from the host schools.

Team semi-finals are slated for Saturday, October 11.

The 24th Annual Singles and 14th Annual Doubles Tournament Series will also begin on Tuesday, October 7 and played concurrently at the team tennis regional sites.

Ryan Keckley of South Bend St. Joseph’s captured last year’s singles title, while Ryan Hollander and Adam Valinetz of North Central (Indpls.) combined their talents to grab the doubles crown.

HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN CROWNED GIRLS GOLF CHAMPION

Warsaw freshman Emily Johnson and top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern were the big winners on Saturday capturing their respective state championships at the 31st Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals held at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.

For Hamilton Southeastern and coach Nancy Nuce, it marked the school’s first title in girls golf and just the second overall. The Royals captured the 1981 title in Class A football.

Warsaw freshman Emily Johnson finished with a 76 on Saturday for a two-round total of 148, becoming the first freshman ever to win medalist honors in the IHSAA tournament. She led the field following Friday’s first round enduring difficult weather conditions by recording a par-72 on the 5,728 yard course.

Casey North of Penn High School was named winner of the 2003 Mental Attitude Award.

The complete results and story are available at 2003 Girls Golf State Finals.

GIRLS GOLF ALL-STATE TEAM ANNOUNCED

The Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association and Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association have announced their selections for the 2003 Girls Golf All-State teams.

Senior Kristine Cook represents state champion Hamilton Southeastern in the all-star lineup.  The complete list of all-state members is on-line at 2003 Girls Golf All-State Team.

ONE CHANGE AMONG LEADERS IN VOLLEYBALL RANKINGS

There was only one change at the top of the weekly Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association polls.  That occurred in Class 3A, where Indianapolis Bishop Chatard moved into the No. 1 spot, with last week’s leader, Mishawaka Marian, dropping to 3rd.  Muncie Central, Muncie Burris and Cowan stayed in their loft perches in their respective polls again this week.

Newcomers to the polls this week included Concord (4A), Homestead (4A), Penn (4A), Blackford (3A), Woodlan (2A) and Whiting (A).

TOP-5 THE SAME IN ISCA GIRLS SOCCER POLL/CHANGES FOR BOYS

With the state tournament set to begin next week, the top-5 teams remained the same in the weekly Indiana Soccer Coaches Association girls soccer poll , with North Central (Indpls.), Carmel, Noblesville, Fort Wayne Dwenger and Evansville North in the same slots.  In fact, with only some minor shuffling, the entire top-10 remained there.

Evansville Central (#18) and Lawrence North (#19) were the only new teams added to this week’s girls’ top-20.

After overtaking Indianapolis Cathedral for the top position a week ago,  South Bend St. Joseph’s managed to hang on to that spot again this week.  The Irish climbed back up to No. 3, behind Lawrence Central, with Washington and North Central (Indpls.) rounding out the top-5.

Zionsville (#12), Plainfield (#18-t) and Mishawaka Marian (#18-t) were the new additions to this week’s top-20 for the boys.

SOCCER STATS AVAILABLE

The IHSAA weekly compilation of statistics for both girls and boys soccer is updated on the web each Tuesday following receipt of the material from the schools across the state.  Girls information is available on the web at 2003 Girls Soccer Stats.  Boys information is on-line at 2003 Boys Soccer Stats.

SOCCER TOURNAMENT DRAW COMPLETED

Pairings for the 10th Annual IHSAA Boys & Girls Soccer Tournament Series were determined by a random draw in the IHSAA offices on Thursday, October 2.  Those pairings are on the IHSAA website at 2003 Boys Soccer Tournament Pairings and 2003 Girls Soccer Tournament Pairings.

Top ranked North Central (Indpls.) will begin play against Speedway in the Park Tudor Sectional of the girls tourney.  Defending state champ Carmel opens up against Noblesville in the Hamilton Southeastern Sectional.

No. 1 rated South Bend St. Joseph’s will start boys’ tournament action against South Bend Clay in the South Bend Adams Sectional.  North Central (Indpls.), the current title-holder and No. 5 in this week’s poll, squares off against Brebeuf Jesuit on the Panthers home field.

The 2003 boys’ tournament will begin on Monday, October 13, with girls’ action slated to get underway Tuesday, October 14.  The IHSAA State Finals will be held on November 1 at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis.

SAME STORY IN CROSS-COUNTRY POLLS LEADERS

Nothing new to report as to the leaders in the weekly Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches weekly polls, with Columbus North and Valparaiso again out front for both the boys and the girls for the 7th consecutive week.

In girls cross country, Chesterton (#2) and Carmel (#3) swapped spots,  with Lawrence North and Fort Wayne Concordia repeating as No. 4 and No. 5.  Noblesville (#18) was the only newcomer to the girls’ rankings.

The boys’ ratings were still topped by Columbus North.  Lawrence North (#2) and Carmel (#3) exchanged places, with Fort Wayne Northrop staying in 4th and Hamilton Southeastern moving up to round out the top-5.  Northridge (#8) and West Lafayette (#9) made the biggest moves into the top-10, with Center Grove likewise joining the upper echelon (#10).  Portage (#19) was the lone addition to the boys’ top-20.

The boys’ and girls’ 2003 cross country sectionals are scheduled for Tuesday, October 14.
