CARMEL CAPTURES BOYS TEAM TENNIS TITLE

The Carmel Greyhounds made it look easy on Saturday, October 18, 2003 as they captured their 4th IHSAA Boys Team Tennis State Championship at North Central (Indpls.) High School, by defeating West Lafayette, 4-1, on a beautiful, sunny day, with the temperature hovering in the 70s.

Carmel began the season as the No. 2 ranked team in the state behind Park Tudor, but quickly moved into the top spot and knocked off the Panthers 4-1 in the North Central (Indpls.) Semi-State to advance to the finals.  The Greyhounds made short work of Valparaiso in the morning session, winning 5-0, losing only eight games in the process.

In the afternoon session, it was much of the same.  The Greyhounds lost only one match all day, that a No. 1 Singles thriller to Tony Adeyemi of West Lafayette, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in the championship round of action.  The combined record of the players who represented Carmel in the state finals was a remarkable 106-7.

Carmel finished the season at 21-0 under head coach Mike Bostic.  Their previous championships had come in 1980, 1981 and 1987, all under head coach Lee Lonzo.  They had claimed state runner-up honors in 1991.

Senior Steven Lee of West Lafayette High School was named winner of the Boys Tennis Mental Attitude Award for 2003.  Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a $1,000.00 scholarship check to West Lafayette High School in his name.

SAME NAMES LEAD FINAL CROSS COUNTRY POLLS

In the final poll of the 2003 girls and boys cross country seasons, the name game remained the same, with Columbus North and Valparaiso displaying their domination, as they have all season.  The Bull Dogs and the Vikings began the season in the No. 1 spots and remained there throughout the campaign.

Though one sectional has already begun, the 32nd Annual IHSAA Volleyball Tournament Series picks up full steam on Thursday, October 23, at 64 sectional sites.

Muncie Central begins defense of its 4A title against Muncie Southside in the Bearcats own sectional.  3A defending champion Delta will open up against Blackford in the Delta Sectional.  Muncie Burris, winner last year in Class 2A, has Frankton as its opening round opponent in the Knightstown sectional.  Last year’s Class A winner, Wapahani, has moved up to Class 2A and takes to the court against Shenandoah in that same Knightstown sectional.

The Perry Central Sectional started up on Monday, with Forest Park, Perry Central and South Spencer all advancing.

You may access the complete 2003 tournament pairings sheets on the IHSAA website at 2003 IHSAA Girls Volleyball Tournament Pairings.

ONE CHANGE AMONG VOLLEYBALL LEADERS

Again this week, there was a single change at the top of the final regular season Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association polls.  That was in Class A, where Cowan and Michigan City Marquette exchanged places, with the Blazers from Marquette moving into the No. 1 spot.  Meanwhile, Muncie Central (4A), Indianapolis Chatard (3A) and Wapahani (2A) stayed on top.

Newcomers to the polls this week included Terre Haute South (4A) and Wes-Del (A).

NO CHANGES IN LEADERS AT REGULAR SEASON END IN FOOTBALL

The IHSAA high school football regular season has come to a conclusion and the final polls are out, showing no changes from last week in the No. 1 slots in the respective polls.

In Class 5A, Ben Davis, with a 25-7 win at Terre Haute North, maintained the top spot in the IFCA rankings, but Evansville Reitz maintained the leadership position again with AP, beating cross-town rival Mater Dei, 24-14.  In 4A, East Noble, which moved to No. 1 a week ago, jumped on Bellmont 49-6 to stay in the top spot.  In Class 3A, Heritage Hills, a 28-3 winner at South Spencer, remained at No. 1 for the second consecutive week. The entire top-10 stayed the same in Class 2A, with Speedway atop the heap.  Pioneer continued to dominate Class A.

Newcomers to the IFCA polls included Lawrence North (5A), Roncalli (4A), Floyd Central (4A) and South Bend St. Joseph’s (3A).

New members of the AP top-10 were Lawrence North (5A), Floyd Central (4A), Boonville (4A) and South Bend St. Joseph’s (3A).
