GIRLS AND BOYS SOCCER HEAD TO STATE FINALS

The 2003 boys and girls soccer tournaments have moved to the state championships this Saturday, November 1, with boys’ semifinal action on two fields at 10:00 a.m. and the state finals beginning at 6:00.  The girls’ semifinals begin at Noon, with their championship game at 8:00.

Washington has never won a boys’ title, but was state runner-up to Fort Wayne Canterbury (1-0) in 1998.  Likewise, South Bend St. Joseph’s and Carroll (Fort Wayne) will be searching for their first boys’ soccer title.  North Central (Indpls.) has taken home four first-place (1994-95-96, 2002) and one runner-up (2000) trophies.

For the ladies, Bloomington South finished as runner-up to Carmel (4-0) in 2002 for their best state finals finish.  Carmel has captured six crowns, including the last three in a row, to go with a 2nd place spot in 1996.  South Bend St. Joseph’s was state champ in 1998 and also had a second-place finish in 1994.  Homestead’s best effort came in 2001 when they finished 2nd.

SOCCER STATS AVAILABLE

The IHSAA weekly compilation of statistics for both girls and boys soccer is updated on the web each Tuesday following receipt of the material from the schools across the state.  Girls information is available on the web at 2003 Girls Soccer Stats.  Boys information is on-line at 2003 Boys Soccer Stats.

CROSS COUNTRY STATE FINALS NEXT UP

The Boys 58th Annual and Girls 23rd Annual Cross Country Tournament Series heads to the Indiana University Cross Country Course in Bloomington on Saturday, November 1, for the state finals.

This year’s top-ranked squad and last year’s boys state champ, Columbus North, topped the Franklin Central Semi-State with a 59 point total, the best score from any of the four semi-states.

The girls defending champion, Valparaiso, ranked No. 1 in the final 2003 poll, also had the best results at any of the semi-state locations, finishing with 41 points to win honors at New Prairie.

Lane assignments are available on the IHSAA website at 2003 Boys Cross Country Lane Assignments and 2003 Girls Cross Country Lane Assignments.

CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA NOTE

The Media Center is located in the University Gym (at the former University High School now known as the Stone Belt Center) at the intersection of Ind. 46/45 and East 10th Street on the eastside of the I.U. campus. This is the same facility used in previous years. Media credentials and state finals programs can be obtained in a room at the back of the building that will serve as the media work area. As usual, a phone for filing purposes will be available. From the parking area outside the gymnasium, follow the signage to the back of the building to the entrance. The course is about a half-mile walk from the work area and the start-finish line is even further so comfortable shoes are strongly recommended. Jason Wille, assistant sports information director, will serve as the media host.

           VOLLEYBALL REGIONALS SLATED FOR SATURDAY

With two of the state’s top-ranked teams already sidelined, it’s on to the regionals at 16 sites in the 32nd Annual IHSAA Volleyball Tournament Series this Saturday, November 1.

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (3A) and Wapahani (2A) have already fallen in this year’s event.  Indeed, 17 top-10 ranked schools in the four classes have called their season to an end.

Muncie Central (35-0) continues defense of its 4A title, facing Harrison (West Lafayette) (24-11).  The 3A champion from a year ago, Delta, was knocked out of this year’s tourney in sectional play by Blackford.  Muncie Burris (30-6), winner last year in Class 2A, continues it quest for domination there, as they go for their 15th title, including seven in a row, when they meet Indianapolis Scecina (17-17).  The 2002 Class A winner, Wapahani, has moved up to Class 2A and is also out of this year’s championship, having lost to Muncie Burris.

The regional lineup is on-line at 2003 IHSAA Girls Volleyball Regional Pairings.  You may access the complete 2003 tournament pairings sheets on the IHSAA website at 2003 IHSAA Girls Volleyball Tournament Pairings.

TWO SCHOOLS FORFEIT FOOTBALL GAMES

Due to the participation of an ineligible player, Pike Central High School has been forced to forfeit two games in which they were victorious this season.  Those games included:  North Knox (19-13) and Tell City (22-21).  The official scores of those games will be 1-0.  After losing to Heritage Hills (65-7) in the state tournament, the Chargers’ record is now 0-10.

Meanwhile, South Bend St. Joseph’s, because of the same infraction, is forfeiting its victory (41-21) over Lakeland on October 10.  Following its victory over West Noble (48-3) in the opening game of the state tourney, the Indians are now 7-3.

FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS ADVANCE TO 2nd ROUND OF SECTIONALS

The second round of sectional play in the 31st Annual IHSAA Football Tournament Series takes to gridirons throughout the state this Friday, October 31.

Defending Class 5A champion Ben Davis remained in contention for another title with a 54-26 won over Decatur Central.

Roncalli, winner a season ago in 4A, blanked Westfield, 24-0.  Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, the Class 3A 2002 champ, jumped on Danville, 40-0.  The Class 2A champion last year, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, has moved up to Class 3A and proved worthy of the trip with a 20-12 victory over Maconaquah.  In Class A, Southwood opened up defense of its title with a 37-18 win over Southern Wells.

Pairings and results for the 31st Annual Football Tournament Series are available on the IHSAA website at 2003 Football Pairings-HTML.

FOOTBALL STATS ON-LINE

The IHSAA continues its weekly compilation of football statistics in a number of categories.  Those stats, as provided by the schools, are available on the IHSAA website under IHSAA 2003 Football Leaders.

BOYS SINGLES/DOUBLES TENNIS CHAMPIONS CROWNED

Jarrod Epkey (12) of Center Grove claimed the championship in the 24th Annual IHSAA Boys Tennis Singles Tournament on Saturday, October 24-25, 2001.  The duo of Trent Glassley (12) and Brian Fleming (12) combined to capture the 14th Annual IHSAA Boys Tennis Doubles Tournament title on those same dates.

Friday action was played on the outside courts at Park Tudor High School, but due to rain on Saturday, competition was moved inside to the Indianapolis Tennis Center at IUPUI.

Epkey won his title by defeating Jorge Burmicky (12) of Eastern (Greentown), 6-2-6-1, to run his season overall record to 14-2, having gone 8-0 in tournament play.  Epkey became the 2nd player from his school to win the singles crown, along with Bryan Smith (10) in 1990 and 1992.

Glassley and Fleming defeated Scott Gray (12) and Chad Holajter (12) of Munster in doubles competition, 6-4, 6-1. Their overall season mark finished at 30-1, including their 11-0 march through the state tourney as they became the first state boys doubles titlists in the school’s history.

In the consolation round, Tony Aker (12), Penn, defeated Tony Adeyemi (12) of West Lafayette,4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in singles and Mark Sherman (12) and Andrew Zale (12) of Warsaw got by Andrew Lahr (11) and Brian Finkbiner (12) of Columbus North, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in doubles play.
