MUNCIE CENTRAL PLACED ON PROBATION

The IHSAA has placed Muncie Central High School on probation for one year and 14 members of the boys basketball team have been ruled ineligible for accepting money and other items from former head coach, Bill Harrell.  Harrell has offered and the school has accepted his resignation.  No replacement has been named.  The school has announced the formation of a committee to seek an interim coach.

Those 14 players may regain their eligibility by making repayment of monies received to the school.  The school will be held responsible for verifying full restitution from the individual players.

SOUTH BEND ST. JOSEPH’S AND CARMEL CAPTURE STATE SOCCER TITLES

Carmel High School emerged as state champion in the 10th Annual IHSAA Girls Soccer Tournament, with a 3-0 victory over South Bend St. Joseph’s during intermittent wet conditions on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis.

It was the 7th girls soccer state championship for Carmel and their 4th in a row.  During their seven titles, they have outscored the opposition 19-1.

Earlier in the day, Carmel, which finished the season at 22-2, had defeated Homestead 4-0 on goals by Jordan O’Banion, Brittany White (10), Caitlin Gordon and Molly Kruger.  South Bend St. Joseph’s, 18-4-3 on the year, reached the grand finale with a 3-0 shutout over Bloomington South, with goals coming from Susan Pinnick (12), Lindsey Hyduk (9) and Jenny Thornton (12).

Jamie Podell of Carmel High School was named winner of the C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award for girls soccer for 2003, following her teams’ championship victory.

South Bend St. Joseph’s emerged as state champion in the 10th Annual IHSAA Boys Soccer Tournament, with a 2-1 victory over North Central (Indpls.) in rainy conditions on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Indians finished the season at 25-0, becoming only the 2nd unbeaten state champ in boys soccer.  North Central (Indpls.), which finished the season 17-4-3, was the other unbeaten champion, having claimed the title with a 23-0 record in 1994, the first year of the state tournament.

Dan Fox of Carroll (Fort Wayne) High School was named winner of the C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award for boys soccer for 2003.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA corporate sponsor, presented a $1,000.00 scholarship check to Carroll (Fort Wayne) High school in the name of Dan Fox.

CROSS COUNTRY CROWNS TO VALPARAISO AND COLUMBUS NORTH

With one of the lowest point totals by a team in state meet history, Columbus North easily outdistanced the rest of the field and captured its second straight state championship in the 58th Annual Boys Cross Country State Meet at the Indiana University Cross Country Course in Bloomington.

The Bull Dogs, behind overall state champion Christian Wagner, placed four runners in the top 21 to accumulate just 43 points, the sixth lowest total in 58 years and the best since 1980 when Bloomington North tallied just 34 at South Grove Golf Course in Indianapolis. It was also the widest margin of victory between the top two teams since that 1980 meet.

Rob Grote of Batesville High School was selected by the IHSAA Executive Committee as the recipient of the Charles F. Maas Mental Attitude Award.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Batesville High School in the name of Rob Grote.

Valparaiso had two runners place in the top 12 overall and Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran senior Alissa McKaig crossed the finish line first to capture honors at the 23rd Annual IHSAA Girls Cross Country State Finals Meet at the Indiana University Cross Country Course in Bloomington.

Senior Racheal Marchand finished fourth (14:14.0) and freshman Lauren Hardesty placed 12th (14:41.6) to lead Valparaiso to its second consecutive state championship and its fourth in five years under coach Karen DeVries.

After capturing the individual state championship, Alissa McKaig of Concordia Lutheran High School was named the recipient of the Mental Attitude Award by the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Concordia Lutheran High School in the name of Alissa McKaig.
