FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS ADVANCE TO REGIONAL ROUND

The 31st Annual IHSAA Football Tournament Series has moved to the regional round this Friday, November 14, with three of last year’s state champions still in the hunt.  Defending Class A titleholder Southwood fell by the wayside last Friday, losing to Adams Central, 46-7.  Fort Wayne Bishop Luers had lost earlier, in the second round of sectional play, 31-15 at Norwell.

The regional line-up is on the web at 2003 IHSAA Football Regional Pairings.  The complete pairings and results for the 31st Annual Football Tournament Series are available on the IHSAA website at 2003 IHSAA Football Tourney Pairings.

Defending Class 5A champion Ben Davis (11-1) still has title hopes, but faces a major showdown on Friday at cross-town rival Warren Central (10-2).  The Warriors defeated the Giants 28-7 in the 3rd game of the season.  Roncalli (9-3), winner a season ago in 4A, continues its march toward another title as they host Mooresville (10-2), a team they beat 35-14 on October 10.  Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (11-1), the Class 3A 2002 champ, will be at home on Friday for a contest against Blackford (9-3).

The combined record of the remaining teams still alive in the state tournament is 404-74 (.845).  Ben Davis is the leader among the current field in regionals won (13), followed by Fort Wayne Dwenger (11), Carmel (10) and Roncalli (10).  Those schools seeking their initial regional win, since the first “regional” games were included as part of the tournament makeup in 1976, include:  Muncie Central; Hamilton Heights; Garrett; Rensselaer Central; Brownstown Central; Seeger; and Turkey Run.

The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has released its 2003-04 Girls Basketball Pre-Season Polls.

Last year’s Class 4A state champ, Kokomo, is ranked No. 20.  Topping the Class 4A list is Warsaw, a loser in the sectional round of last year’s tourney.  Beech Grove, following their title run in Class 3A, is pre-season slotted at No. 12.  The Class 3A leader is Brebeuf Jesuit, also a sectional dropout in last year’s event.  In Class 2A, Shenandoah will defend its title and begin the 2003-04 season in the top spot.  The Class A crown went to Tri-Central in 2002-03 and they also start out the new year as the leader in that class.
