TWENTY FOOTBALL TEAMS HEAD TO SEMI-STATES

The 31st Annual IHSAA Football Tournament Series advances to the semi-state round this Friday, November 21, with only two of last year’s state champions still in the hunt.

Defending Class 5A champion Ben Davis was knocked out of the title chase on Friday by Warren Central, 27-20.  2002 Class A titleholder Southwood had earlier been eliminated, as had last year’s Class 2A winner, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers.

Roncalli, winner a season ago in 4A, defeated Mooresville, 35-14, and plays at East Central.  Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, the Class 3A 2002 champ, handled Blackford, 50-21 and advances to a home game against Heritage Hills..

The combined record of the remaining teams still alive in the state tournament is 226-33 (.873).  Penn and Roncalli are the leaders among teams still alive in tournament play in semi-states won with eight.  Hamilton Heights, Harding, Garrett, Seeger and Tecumseh are all seeking their first trip to the state finals.

The complete pairings and results for the 31st Annual Football Tournament Series are available on the IHSAA website at 2003 IHSAA Football Tourney Pairings.

The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Pre-Season Top 20 Poll will be released on Monday, November 24.

FIRST WEEK OF GIRLS BASKETBALL SEASON COMPLETED

Following an abbreviated opening week of the IHSAA girls basketball season, there were no changes in the No. 1 spots in any of the four classes:  Warsaw, Class 4A; Brebeuf Jesuit, Class 3A; Shenandoah, Class 2A; and Tri-Central in Class A.

Last year’s Class A winner, Kokomo, was ranked No. 15 this week after opening up the year at 20th in the pre-season poll.  In 4A, the 2003 champ, Beech Grove, moved into the top-10 at No. 9.  The 2003 Class 2A winner, Shenandoah, stayed in the top-spot for the second successive week.  Last season’s titlist in Class A, Tri-Central, continues as the leader again this week in that classification.
