 GYMNASTICS SEASON UNDERWAY

The 2003-04 girls gymnastics season officially began on Monday, December 8.  Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger will be looking to defend its 2003 state championship and put their 3rd gymnastics trophy in their showcase.  The Saints out pointed three-time state champ Chesterton, 111.425 – 110.950, in 2003.

 

The 2004 IHSAA state tournament begins with sectional competition on March 6, with the regionals slated March 13 and the state finals at Perry Meridian High School on Marcy 20.

HOOSIER CAPTURES 2003 NIAAA AWARD OF MERIT

Bruce Whitehead, CMAA, who spent more than 30 years as an athletic director in Indiana before joining the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) staff in 2001, is the 2003 recipient of the NIAAA Award of Merit.

Whitehead will receive his award Monday, December 15, at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, during luncheon festivities at the 34th annual National Conference of High School Directors of Athletics conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

 

The Award of Merit is the most prestigious award presented by the NIAAA to an individual who has shown outstanding leadership in interscholastic athletics or related areas.

 

Whitehead had a tremendous impact on high school athletics in Indiana as a teacher, coach and athletic director at Crawfordsville (Indiana) High School from 1968 to 2001. It is a task he continues today at the national level in Indianapolis, in his position as NIAAA administrative assistant.

DON JELLISON OF NOBLESVILLE DAILY TIMES TO RECEIVE

INDIANA BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME SILVER MEDAL

Don Jellison, sports editor of the Noblesville Daily times, will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame on March 24, 2004 at the annual awards banquet at the Primo Banquet Hall in Indianapolis.  Don has been writing abut Indiana high school basketball since 1956.

 

The Hall will also recognize Harold Gourley, Evansville, and Jesse Lynch, Indianapolis as the 2004 recipients of the Center Circle Officials Award.

NATIONAL ATHLETIC DIRECTORS CONFERENCE

SCHEDULED FOR INDIANAPOLIS

More than 1,800 athletic administrators, spouses and exhibitors are expected to attend the 34th annual National Conference of High School Directors of Athletics December 13-16 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The conference, sponsored by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), will be held primarily at the Indiana Convention Center, with some meetings at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown and Westin hotels.

FEW NEW NAMES ADDED TO BASKETBALL POLLS

With regular season play is now underway, changes have begun to occur as far as the shaking out of the top teams in the state in the IBCA and AP Polls.  New additions to the IBCA Poll included Benton Central (#16), Indianapolis Arlington (#18) and LaPorte (#19).  New to the AP Polls:  Heritage Hills (3A); Frankton (2A); Garrett (2A); and, Orleans (A).

LEADERS THE SAME IN ICGSA GIRLS BASKETBALL RANKINGS

There were no changes in the top spots in this week’s Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association’s weekly basketball polls, though there was some minor movement in the ranks.

 

In Class 4A, Bloomington North is still the leader, with Castle (#7) and Pike (#10) joining the elite-10.  In Class 3A, Tippecanoe Valley again shows the way, with North Harrison (#9-t) the lone new arrival there.  The Class 2A frontrunner, Shenandoah, was joined in the top-10 by South Ripley (#9) and in Class A, North Vermillion shows the way, with New Harmony joining the crew at #10.

 

Dropping out of the top-10:  Gary West (4A), Mooresville (4A); Beech Grove (3A); Southwestern (Hanover) (2A); and, West Central (A).

Carmel maintained its hold on top spots in both the boys and girls Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association’s polls for the week.

MILESTONES

 

Kaleigh Gossman, a senior at Castle, recently scored her 1000th career point.

 

Triton Central girls' basketball coach Larry Pringle picked up his 300th career victory Friday, December 5, with a 43-32 win against Waldron.

 

South Bend St. Joseph’s junior Aimee Litka scored her 1000th career point on December 2.  She is only the second girls basketball player at the school to surpass the mark, along with Bridget Pluta who holds the school record of 1,077 points.

 

 

IHSAA OVERTIME

Tipton head football coach Mike Tolle has announced that next season (2004) will be his last as head coach.  Mike was the head coach at Central Noble H.S. from 1977-1980.  For the past 23 years, he has coached the Blue Devils to a 182-70 and has twice been the state runner-up in 3A (1988, 1994).

 

Jim Berger has resigned as head football coach at South Bend Riley.

 

Norm Sloan, a Lawrence Central High School graduate who coached North Carolina State to the 1974 NCAA basketball title, died December 9 at age 77.  He was a four-sport athlete at Lawrence Central, graduating in 1944. He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984.

 

Pat Mapes, Principal of Delta High School and member of the IHSAA Board of Directors, and his wife, Michelle, are the parents of a baby girl born December 8.  Logan Marie weighed in at 6 lb. 14 oz. and was 19 ¾ in. long.
