METHODIST SPORTS MEDICINE TO HOST WORKSHOPS

Dr. Chris Carr and Methodist Sports Medicine Center, the Official Sports Medicine Provider of the Indiana High School Athletic Association and its state championship events, beginning in January 2004 will be hosting workshops to assist coaches who coach young athletes ages 6-12.  The free workshops are designed to give youth sport coaches effective coaching "skills" to best facilitate a positive sport experience.

 

The workshops will be held January 14 and 28, February 10 and 23 and March 3 and 15.  Each workshop will begin with registration/dinner from 5:30 - 6 p.m. with the program concluding at 9 p.m.

CARMEL DOMINANT IN SWIMMING & DIVING POLLS

After falling out of the top spot a week ago, Carmel regained the top spot in this week’s IHSSCA boys swim poll, exchanging places with Homestead, giving the Greyhounds a clean sweep atop both polls. 

 

New arrivals in the boys rankings included Yorktown and Pendleton Heights.  Though there was movement, there were no new faces added to the girls top-20 this week.

 

Vanishing from of this week’s boys’ top-20:  Terre Haute North and Highland.

MILESTONES

Warsaw senior guard Jaclyn Leininger passed the 1,000 point mark December 13 at Plymouth, with a 31-pt game in a 60-39 win. She stands 3rd on the all-time list at Warsaw with 1,015, and is chasing Hilary O'Connell's all time record of 1,135 (2002).

 

Senior Natalie Young became Adams Central’s all-time leading scorer on December 16, contributing 26 points in a victory over New Haven, giving her a total of 1,150 points and moving her past Cheri Urich for the lead.

 

Danielle Rains, a senior at Eastern Greene, broke her own school record of eight by making nine three pointers in one contest against Red Hill, IL on December 6.  She holds several school records including 68 3's in one season, and 3 pt. FG%for a season .503% (68-135).  

 

Rebekah Parker became the all-time career scoring leader in Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball history on December 20.  She now has 1,239 points, breaking the old mark of 1,238 held by 1978 Indiana All-Star Cathy Welch.

IHSAA OVERTIME

Dan Callahan, DeKalb head football coach, has resigned his coaching position. He will remain at the school as a Biology teacher.

 

The “Milan Miracle” hosted by Gene White (Center for the Milan Indians in 1954) will be 1 of 46 Continuing Studies courses or workshops offered by Franklin College beginning in March of 2004.  The Continuing Studies program offers non-credit courses and workshops for individuals in the personal and professional development areas. The course will be held on Thursday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00PM on the following dates (March 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th) concluding just prior to the IHSAA State Championships.  Registration information can be obtained calling the Continuing Studies office at (317) 738-8094.

 

Craig Potter has resigned as head football coach at Perry Meridian, following 10 years with the Falcons.

 

After three seasons, Aaron Strader has resigned as head football coach at Southport.

 

Isang Jacob is the new boys soccer coach at Warren Central, replacing Joe Potesta.

 

Ray Crowe died December 20 at age 88. Crowe led Indianapolis Crispus Attucks to back-to-back state championships in 1955 and 1956. During his 7 seasons with the Tigers, he compiled a record of 179-20.  He was a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

 

Harrison (West Lafayette) has named Nathan Underwood as interim baseball coach for the 2004 season.  He replaces Dusty Sims, who resigned after two seasons.
