CHANGES UP FRONT IN 3 OF 4 GIRLS BASKETBALL POLLS

The leaders in each of the four classes of girls basketball did some big time shuffling over the holidays, with Hamilton Southeastern (11-1, vs. Brebeuf Jesuit January 4), South Bend St. Joseph’s (10-0, @ South Bend Clay January 7) and Loogootee (12-0, @ Wood Memorial January January 4) taking over the leadership spots in Class 4A, 3A and A respectively. 

 

Only Winamac (12-0, @ Carroll (Flora) January 8) in Class A, managed to survive the holiday action in the No. 1 position.

 

Huntington North (4A) and Brown County (3A) were the only newcomers added to the top-10s this week.

GIRLS BASKETBALL STATS ON-LINE

The compilation for girls basketball statistics for the 2004-05 season is underway and will be updated on a weekly basis, as reported by schools throughout the state.  The update is on the web under Girls Basketball.

 

CROWDED AT TOP IN 4-A BOYS BASKETBALL

It became very crowded at the top of the Class 4A A.P. Poll following holiday action, with Lawrence North (7-1, vs. Franklin Central January 4) and Indianapolis Arlington (8-0, vs. Indianapolis Chatard January 7) tying for the No. 1 spot.  Class 3A also had a new resident atop the list, with Bellmont (10-1, vs. Columbia City January 8) moving into the slot, replacing Washington (8-2, vs. Evansville Mater Dei January 8), which fell to 5th.  There was also a newcomer at the pinnacle of the Class 2A lineup, with Jimtown (7-1, vs. Knox January 7) sliding up from No. 3 in the previous poll, while the former top selection, Bluffton (6-1, vs. Eastbrook January 7) dropped down a notch.

 

Only Tri-Central (8-0, @ Cass January 7) in Class A managed to maintain the No. 1 ranking.

 

Newcomers to this week’s polls included Mishawaka (4A), Wawasee and New Castle (3A), Providence, Winchester and Churubusco (2A) and Jac-Cen-Del (A).

LAWRENCE NORTH TOPS WRESTLING POLL

The defending team state champion Lawrence North Wildcats topped the weekly Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Poll, with ten-time state champ Evansville Mater Dei in the runner-up spot. Perry Meridian, last year’s runner-up, was slotted 9th in this week’s lineup.

The IHSAA wrestling tourney begins January 29, with the individual finals on February 18-19 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and the team finals on February 26 at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

 

HOBART STILL NO. 1 IN GYMNASTICS POLL

Hobart again leads the way in the weekly Indiana High School Gymnastics Coaches Poll.  Last year’s state champs edged out Fort Wayne Northrop, up from 7th in the previous poll, for the top spot.  Valparaiso, last year’s runner-up, climbed into the No. 4 position.

NAMES THE SAME ON TOP OF SWIMMING POLLS

North Central (Indpls.) and Carmel retained their holds on the No. 1 positions in this week’s Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association Polls. 

 

Brownsburg joined the top-10 on the boys side, up from 11th a week ago.  Lake Central broke into the top-10 for the girls, up from 12th in the previous rankings.

NEW INTERN JOINS IHSAA STAFF

Travis Tranbarger has joined the staff of the Indiana High School Athletic Association for the winter internship, as part of his collegiate requirements at Ball State University.

 

A graduate of Western Boone High School, Travis is currently a senior at Ball State, majoring in Sport Administration, and will receive his Bachelor of Science Degree in May 2005.

 

During his internship, he will work with the entire staff of Assistant and Associate Commissioners, as well as the Commissioner himself, the secretarial staff and the Sports Information Director.

Applications for the position of Communications Director for the Indiana High School Athletic Association are being accepted through January 10, 2005. The application form is on the IHSAA website at IHSAA Communications Director Application.

New Castle junior Gary Black recorded his 100th career wrestling victory earlier this season.

 

Stephanie Baker of Tri broke the school record for career three-pointers on December 28th in a game against Oldenburg Academy. She hit four three-pointers that night, breaking the mark of 117 held by Nikki Bean.

 

Senior Jamie Gallmeyer passed the 1000-point girls basketball career scoring mark at Westview.

 

Elkhart Central senior basketball player Derek Drews surpassed the 1,000-point career mark.

 

IHSAA OVERTIME

 

31-year old Green Beret Jeremy Wright, a graduate of Southwestern (Shelbyville) High School and Wabash College, was killed by a roadside bomb this past weekend while serving with the Army Special Forces in Afghanistan.   Wright was named recipient of the Robert S. Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award for IHSAA Boys Track and Field in 1992.

 

Terry Koontz has been named the head boy’s track coach at New Castle.

 

The New Castle Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2005 includes: Scott Raines (1977), John Boyd (1979), and former basketball coach Sam Alford.

 

John Diener has been named the new head football coach at Northfield, taking over for Scott Hoberg who had resigned after the season.

 

Shan Hartsough has been named football coach at Goshen.  He replaces Andy Strati who resigned following the 2004 season.

 

Wabash has hired Amy Degitz as its volleyball coach,  replacing AD-Matt Stone who coached one season on an interim basis.

 

Pike has named its gymnasium after former head basketball coach Ed Siegel.  He accumulated a record of 343-229 in 25 seasons with the Red Devils.  His overall coaching mark was 458-298 in 33 years.

 

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard volleyball coach Jill Starliper has announced her retirement after 11 seasons at the school and a 302-81 record.  She coached the Trojans to a 36-4 mark and the class 3A state title in November.
