MEDIA CREDENTIAL INFORMATION FOR WINTER TOURNAMENTS

The Indiana High School Athletic Association is now accepting requests for media credentials to its winter state finals tournaments in girls swimming and diving, individual wrestling, team wrestling, boys swimming and diving and girls gymnastics.

The 2004-05 IHSAA State Finals Media Credential (a black, laminated credential) issued last fall will be used for the winter tournament events and is good for admission. This credential will not allow access to the girls basketball or boys basketball state finals which require a separate pass.

As a friendly reminder, the IHSAA does not issue credentials to sectional, regional or semi-state competitions. In those cases, please contact the host school’s athletic department.

Those outlets wishing to broadcast any level of any IHSAA tournament event should contact Mark Higdon of Associated Sports Productions at 317-633-1456 to make advance arrangements.

Of note, the IHSAA asks your cooperation in limiting your requests to legitimate, working members of the media. Credentials are not transferable and unauthorized usage may result in revocation of credential privileges. Also, children will not be granted credentials and should not be brought to the venue.

Outlets should make their request on company letterhead and fax to Sports Information Director Jason Wille at 317-575-4244. E-mail requests will not be accepted. Please note the schedule of events below.

GIRLS BASKETBALL STATE TOURNAMENT DRAW SET

A field of 383 teams will begin play at 64 sectional sites Tuesday, February 8 in the 2005 IHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament Series. Sectional play will continue on February 11 and 12, with regionals scheduled for February 19, semi-states on February 26 and the state finals at Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday, March 5. When all is said and done, a total of 379 games will have been played over the four week span.

Of note, semi-state host sites consist of Elkhart Central (Northside Gym) and Plymouth in the north and Southport and Southridge in the south. Game assignments to each site will be announced on Sunday, February 20 (the day after regionals) with the intention of assigning teams to each site based on geography.

At the state finals, there will be a championship game in each of the four classes, beginning with Class A at 10:30 a.m. and followed immediately by the Class 2A game. After a mid-afternoon break, the second session will begin with the Class 3A championship game at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Class 4A championship game.

Among the defending state champions, host Tri-Central, received a bye into the semifinals against Southern Wells in Class A Sectional 54. In 2A, Rochester will open first round play against Winamac in Sectional 35 at Rensselaer Central. Brebeuf Jesuit will face home-standing Crawfordsville in the first round of Class 3A’s Sectional 25 and 4A North Central of Indianapolis will head to Sectional 9 at Hamilton Southeastern to square off against the home team in the opening round.

FOOTBALL

INDIANA PRESENCE TO BE FELT IN SUPER BOWL XXXIX

The State of Indiana has several connections to Super Bowl XXXIX that will play out in Jacksonville, Fla. this Sunday, including three New England players that hail from our state.

  • Backup outside linebacker Rosevelt Colvin joined the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent in 2003. He attended Indianapolis Broad Ripple High School graduating in 1995. As a senior, he earned first team all-state accolades setting a school record with 219 tackles, including 126 solos. He was a second team all-state pick as a junior. He also played basketball for the Rockets before accepting a football scholarship to play at Purdue and was drafted in the fourth round of the 1999 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears.

  • Starting right tackle Brandon Gorin grew up in Muncie where he garnered first team all-state honors as a senior defensive tackle for the Muncie Southside Rebels in 1996. He also played basketball and threw the discus for the track and field team. Gorin played his college days at Purdue on the offensive line and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the 2001 draft before signing with the Patriots as a free agent in 2003.

·         Patriots starting free safety Eugene Wilson starred at Merrillville High School where he was twice named an All-State performer. He played cornerback, running back and wide receiver for the Pirates on the gridiron and also earned four letters in basketball. Graduating in 1999, he went on to play college football at Illinois. He was drafted by New England in the second round (36th overall) of the 2003 NFL draft.

Other New England players with Indiana ties include starting left tackle Matt Light and third-string center/guard Gene Mruczkowski, both of whom played at Purdue, and backup wide receiver David Givens of Notre Dame. New England coaches with connections include offensive coordinator/running backs coach Charlie Weis, who graduated from Notre Dame in 1978. Weis was introduced earlier this winter as the next head coach at Notre Dame. Along with Weis, linebackers coach Dean Pees served as a Notre Dame assistant in 1994, assistant head coach/offensive line Dante Scarnecchia worked as the offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts in 1989-90 and special teams coach Brad Seely was the special teams/tight ends coach for the NFL franchise in 1989-93.

Among the Philadelphia Eagles, none played high school ball in Indiana but several played or coached on the college or professional level here.

Backup right tackle Ian Allen played at Purdue, while third string defensive tackle Paul Grasmanis played at Notre Dame as did second string running back Dorsey Levens for two seasons before transferring. Interestingly, Grasmanis is married to the former Kerry White, the 1991 and 1992 IHSAA state track champion in the 800 meters from Warsaw High School. Additionally, reserve guard Steve Sciullo, who played 13 games for the Indianapolis Colts in 2003, was picked up on waivers early this season. Current Eagles coaches with ties include defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, who spent time at Indiana University (1973-77), then moved to Notre Dame from 1977-83, including its 1977 national championship season. Also, special teams quality control coach Ted Daisher coached the defensive line at IU from 1998-2000, and secondary coach Trent Walters was an assistant coach with the Hoosiers from 1968-71 and 1973-80. He also coached the Notre Dame secondary in 2002 and 2003 before landing with the Eagles this season.

VOLLEYBALL

NFHS APPROVES USE OF LIBERO PLAYER

Use of the libero (LEE-BAH-RO) player in high school volleyball, effective with the 2006-07 season, was approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Volleyball Rules Committee January 9-10 at its annual meeting in Indianapolis. All volleyball rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Adoption of the use of the libero player in Indiana high school play has yet to be ruled upon. By definition in the press release linked below, a libero is a player that specializes in defense and serve reception. The player wears a distinctive contrasting uniform from the other players on the team and is limited in the actions they can perform. Actions the libero cannot perform:

1.   Play front row – no blocking or attempting to block.

2.   Serve

3.   Complete an attack from anywhere on the court if the ball is completely above the height of the net.

4.   A teammate cannot complete an attack from above the height of the net if the libero used fingertips to pass (set) the ball from in the attack zone.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

  • After 43 years on the Woodlan sideline, including 40 as head coach, Warriors football coach Leland Etzler announced his retirement recently. Etzler notched a record of 287-117-4, was inducted into the Indiana High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame, won 11 Allen County Athletic Conference championships, including a berth in the 1981 Class A state finals. He mentored 45 players who have gone on to play college football, 52 who have gone on to coach, 29 all-state selections, 38 academic all-state picks, 25 two-time all-conference players, and 82 sets of father-son combinations.

·         Keith Fiedler resigned as Carmel High School football coach last week. Fiedler compiled a 64-34 record in eight seasons, including an 8-5 mark and sectional title in 2004. The Greyhounds won five sectionals in his tenure. Fiedler helped guide the Greyhounds to five state championships as an assistant. He is a past president of the Indiana Football Coaches Association and was head coach in the 2004 Indiana North-South All-Star Game. Fiedler will continue as a teacher at Carmel.

  • Alexandria senior guard, Jodi Howell set another benchmark in her stellar career on Wednesday, Jan. 26. With 7:25 left in the second quarter, Howell scored on a baseline jumper vs. Marion to surpass the Alexandria career mark (regardless of gender) of 1,791 points set by former boys player and 1996 Indiana All Star, Chris Hahn. The Purdue-bound Howell finished the game with 25 points on the evening. Her current career point total is 1,806 which now places Howell 43rd on the girl's all-time points list. Howell missed almost her entire junior year due to an injury.

  • In scoring 25 points in a losing effort, Wawasee senior Kory Lantz reached the 1,000 point plateau for his career on Friday, Jan. 28. His Warriors fell 71-68 at Concord.

  • South Bend Riley senior Kendra Reynolds netted her 1,000 career point in spectacular fashion on Tuesday, Jan. 25. Reynolds banked in a halfcourt shot at the end of the first period to become the fourth player in school history to reach the milestone joining Crystal Norman, Suntana Granderson and Erin Miller.
