IHSAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO CONSIDER BY-LAW PROPOSALS

The IHSAA Board of Directors will conduct its annual meeting at 8 a.m. (EST/CDT) on Monday, May 2 at the IHSAA Office, 9150 North Meridian St., Indianapolis.  The 17-person board, with Patrick Mapes presiding as President, will consider an agenda that includes 19 proposals to amend the current IHSAA by-laws.

Following the conclusion of the Board of Directors meeting, the monthly meeting of the IHSAA Executive Committee will be conducted. IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress and members of the board will be available for interviews in between the two sessions while the commissioner also will be available during the afternoon after completion of the committee gathering.

Ress will entertain questions from the media on any of the proposals this week.

The meeting’s agenda is posted to the IHSAA website in PDF at: http://www.ihsaa.org/announcements/2004-05/05025agenda.pdf

As outlined in the IHSAA by-laws, any member school principal, any member of the Board of Directors or the Commissioner may make a proposal for an amendment as long as it is presented to the IHSAA Office prior to March 1. The board has four options on each proposal: affirm, deny, table or amend.

Significant proposals on the Board of Directors agenda include:

·         Limiting a member school’s open facility program for any sport to the season immediately preceding that sport season and summer.

·         Adding a second moratorium week to the school calendar between Week 50 and prior to Week 5 as chosen by the member school.

·         Moving back two days the first practice date for girls and boys basketball from Monday to Saturday allowing coaches to have multiple practices given it is a non-school day.

·         Moving back two days the first practice date for all winter and spring sports from Monday to Saturday allowing coaches to have multiple practices given it is a non-school day.

·         Adding a third day of no live contact to the pre-season football practice period.

·         Limiting the number of volleyball matches on school nights to two per week exclusive of conference and county tournaments.

Significant items on the Executive Committee agenda include:

·         Review status of Gymnastics as an IHSAA-sponsored sport.

·         Discussion and action on proposals from the gymnastics committee of the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association.

·         Discussion and action on proposals from the Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association.

·         Discussion and action on proposals from the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association.
