IHSAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
TO CONSIDER BY-LAW PROPOSALS
The IHSAA
Board of Directors will conduct its annual meeting at 8 a.m. (EST/CDT) on
Monday, May 2 at the IHSAA Office,
Following
the conclusion of the Board of Directors meeting, the monthly meeting of the
IHSAA Executive Committee will be conducted. IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress and
members of the board will be available for interviews in between the two
sessions while the commissioner also will be available during the afternoon
after completion of the committee gathering.
Ress will
entertain questions from the media on any of the proposals this week.

As
outlined in the IHSAA by-laws, any member school principal, any member of the
Board of Directors or the Commissioner may make a proposal for an amendment as
long as it is presented to the IHSAA Office prior to March 1. The board has
four options on each proposal: affirm, deny, table or amend.
Significant
proposals on the Board of Directors agenda include:

Limiting
a member school’s open facility program for any sport to the season immediately
preceding that sport season and summer.
·
Adding
a second moratorium week to the school calendar between Week 50 and prior to
Week 5 as chosen by the member school.
·
Moving
back two days the first practice date for girls and boys basketball from Monday
to Saturday allowing coaches to have multiple practices given it is a
non-school day.
·
Moving
back two days the first practice date for all winter and spring sports from
Monday to Saturday allowing coaches to have multiple practices given it is a
non-school day.
·
Adding
a third day of no live contact to the pre-season football practice period.
·
Limiting
the number of volleyball matches on school nights to two per week exclusive of
conference and county tournaments.
Significant
items on the Executive Committee agenda include:

Review
status of Gymnastics as an IHSAA-sponsored sport.
·
Discussion
and action on proposals from the gymnastics committee of the Indiana Coaches of
Girls Sports Association.
·
Discussion
and action on proposals from the Indiana High School Swimming Coaches
Association.
·
Discussion
and action on proposals from the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches
Association.
The Board of Directors is comprised of eighteen
seats. Twelve board seats are filled by any qualified individual (open seats)
from each of the three legislative districts, and six board seats are filled by
two qualified female representatives, two qualified minorities and two
qualified urban school representatives from the northern and southern districts.
All elective terms are for three years, beginning on
July 1 following election, or for the remainder of an unexpired
term in case of a vacancy. All directors must be administrators or full-time
teachers of grade 9 or above from a member school in good standing or central
office administrators.
It is the duty of the board
to establish the rules and By-Laws of the Association.
Under the provision of the
IHSAA By-Laws, the Board of Directors meets annually on Monday of Week 44 of
the IHSAA calendar. Special meetings may be called as needed.
