STATE SOFTBALL DRAW TOMORROW, SPRING TOURNAMENTS BEGIN NEXT WEEK

Pairings for the 21st Annual IHSAA Softball State Tournament Series will be drawn tomorrow morning which signals the spring sports tournament season is drawing near.

 

IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress will conduct the drawing with the assistance of several staff members beginning at 8 a.m. in the Assembly Room of the IHSAA Office in Indianapolis. As soon as possible after the draw, the pairings will be e-mailed to school athletic directors and our statewide media list and also be posted to the Association website at www.ihsaa.org.

 

Looking ahead to next week, sectionals for the 32nd Annual Girls Track and Field State Tournament Series and the 102nd Boys Track and Field State Tournament Series will be contested next week. The girls sectionals are scheduled for Tuesday, May 17 at 32 sites around the state, while the boys sectionals will be run on Thursday, May 19, also at 32 sites. Anticipated start times at each sectional will be available on the IHSAA website late this week. For more information, including assignment of schools, click boys tournament or girls tournament.

 

Also scheduled for this Monday, May 16, are the meetings of girls tennis coaches to determine the sectional playing schedule at each site. The pairings for the 31st Annual State Tournament Series will be available on the website as they are received from the schools. Sectional round play begins Thursday, May 19 and runs through Saturday, May 21. For more information, including assignment of schools, select team tennis tournament or individual tennis tournament.

 

Thursday, May 19 is also the draw date for the 39th Annual Baseball State Tournament Series. The event will begin at 8 a.m. in the Assembly Room of the IHSAA Office in Indianapolis. As in softball, the pairings will be e-mailed and posted as soon as possible after the conclusion of the draw. For additional information, select baseball tournament.

 

 

ALL-SPORTS CREDENTIAL WILL BE USED FOR SPRING STATE FINALS

The 2004-05 IHSAA Media Credential (a black, laminated credential) issued last fall to outlets will be valid for media admission to all IHSAA state finals events in the spring tournament season.

 

As a friendly reminder, the IHSAA does not issue credentials to sectional, regional or semi-state competitions. In those cases, please contact the host school’s athletic department.

 

Those outlets wishing to broadcast any level of any IHSAA tournament event should contact Mark Higdon of Associated Sports Productions at 317-633-1456 to make advance arrangements.

 

Of note, the IHSAA asks your cooperation in limiting your requests to legitimate, working members of the media. Credentials are not transferable and unauthorized usage may result in revocation of credential privileges. Also, children will not be granted credentials and should not be brought to the venue.

 

Outlets should make their request on company letterhead and fax to Sports Information Director Jason Wille at 317-575-4244. E-mail requests will not be accepted. Please note the schedule of events below.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

 

·         Wes-Del junior Chris Bookout hit a hole-in-one on May 4 at Club Run Golf Course in Upland.  He hit a 7-iron from 150 yards out on the eighth hole to knock in the first ace of his career.  Bookout earned medalist honors with a 38 in its dual with Eastbrook.

 

·         Columbus North fired its lowest nine-hole boys golf score in school history with a 140 at Cascades Golf Course in a dual meet with Bloomington North.

 

·         Woodlan High School has named a new football coach for the 2005 season.  Barry Ehle, who has been with Woodlan as an assistant for the past 13 years, will take over the reigns from Leland Etzler, who had been with the school for 40 years and had compiled a 287-117-4 record.

 

·         Greg Habegger, currently a dean of students and a former boys basketball coach at Hamilton Southeastern, was named one of the Royals' athletic directors on May 9. His appointment is effective for 2005-06 school year as he takes over for retiring AD Ken Seitz.

 

·         Sophomore right-hander Morgan Hackman helped Northridge knock off Goshen, 17-0, as she pitched a five-inning no-hitter on May 4.

 

·         On May 6, Hamilton Southeastern and Avon played the longest softball game in Indiana high school history and the 10th longest in the nation, according to the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. In a 25 inning game that lasted more than five hours, Hamilton Southeastern outlasted host Avon, 2-1.  The previous record was 24 innings. Hamilton Southeastern sophomore pitcher Morgan Melloh struck out 37 batters, which also breaks the state record of 27 set by Center Grove’s Darci Wood last year. Avon junior pitcher Jennifer Chasteen struck out 23 and walked just one. Both pitchers tallied complete games.

 

·         Brownsburg beat McCutcheon, 1-0, behind pitcher Ashley Hobbs’ fifth no-hitter and 11th shutout of the year on April 29.

 

·         Troy Holmes, a former three-sport athlete and 1983 Bremen graduate is the high school's new athletic director. Holmes, who currently works in real estate, will take over the athletic program that Don Harrison, Bremen High School's principal, and Bruce Jennings, assistant principal, have been overseeing on an interim basis since September, when former athletic director Marty Huber resigned from the position.

 

·         Mike Jones, second year boys track coach and assistant football coach at Muncie Central, was named the new athletic director at Delta taking over for Steve Reed who is retiring after 15 years. Jones, who begins his duties July 1, was a football assistant for seven seasons at Yorktown and also was girls track coach there before going to Muncie Central.

 

·         Kelly Koverman led North Daviess to a 2-0 softball victory over Shakamak, with a no-hitter, striking out nine batters.

 

·         Fort Wayne Snider knocked off Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, 3-0, on May 4 as Snider junior Chris LaGrow threw 12 strikeouts in seven innings to record a no-hitter.

 

·         The Franklin school board approved the hiring of Michael McClure as Franklin football coach. McClure replaces Dave Coudret, who left to take over at Beech Grove. McClure was the coach at Elkhart Central the past three seasons and at Franklin College for nine seasons prior (1989-97).

 

·         Seeger High School has named a new boys basketball coach for the 2005-06 season.  Brad Metzger will replace interim head coach John Collins.  Metzger was coach at Oak Hill last year and previously at Marion Lakeview Christian where he coached four years earning a sectional championship in 2002.

 

·         Brittany Miller of Leo High School pitched her second no-hitter of the season striking out 11 in a 2-0 win over South Adams on April 5.

 

·         Russ Milligan earned his 400th victory as Center Grove softball coach on May 7 when his Trojans defeated Shenadoah, 4-0, in the first game of the Trojan Softball Classic. With the triumph, Milligan’s record at Center Grove stands at 400-36-2, a .913 winning percentage, including state championships in 1995, 1998 (3A) and 2003 (3A).

 

·         Wes-Del’s Lacee Moore eclipsed a 13-year-old school record in the 800 meter run recently.  She ran a time of 2:33.6 breaking the record set by Amy Jones in 1992.

 

·         The IHSAA has hired Josh Rattray for its fall internship in sports administration. Rattray, a current Butler University student and Crown Point High School graduate will begin working at the Association Office in mid-August.  He is working toward a major in Media Arts with minors in both business administration and journalism with a concentration in public relations.  Rattray has been a licensed official with the IHSAA in both basketball and baseball and also serves as play-by-play announcer for the Butler women’s basketball team.

 

·         Aryn Ross struck out 15 batters on his way to throwing a no-hitter and helping Hauser beat Indian Creek, 8-0, in baseball action on May 4.

 

·         Dave Sabaini of Terre Haute, an IHSAA licensed official in baseball, football and basketball, and an outgoing officer of the Wabash Valley Official's Association, has been named Chairman of the NFHS Officials Association Publication Committee for a two-year term. The appointment became effective May 1. The NFHS Officials Association Publication Committee is responsible for publishing, Official's Quarterly, a magazine publication that is sent to every NFHS member official in the country.  Sabaini oversees an eight-member national panel under the direction of John Gillis of the NFHS. Sabaini has authored a number of articles on officiating for both "Official's Quarterly" and "Referee" Magazines.

 

·         Lafayette Jefferson’s Lanae Stovall broke two of her own school records at the City/County meet on May 2.  She broke her previous record of 14.89 in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.84.  She also ran a time of 46.11 in the 300 hurdles surpassing her previous record of 46.59.

 

·         Jimtown softball pitchers Sierra VanDekeere and Megan Totzke teamed up to throw two consecutive no-hitters recentlyVanDekeere helped shutout Knox, 17-0, by fanning 11 batters in five innings. It was her second career shutout. The following day, Totzke helped the Jimmies knock off Triton 13-0 by taking out nine batters in a five inning contest.

 

·         Kokomo boys varsity basketball coach Mike Wade has left his post of five years to take the athletic director position at the school. Wade, who was hired Monday, May 2, will take over for retiring AD Jim Callane beginning June 6.

 

·         During the 45th annual Seymour Boys Track and Field Invitational on Tuesday, April 25, Seymour junior Eric Werskey set two new meet records. Werskey threw the discus 171-05-00 and the shot put 56-06.50 which set a school record. On Monday, May 2 during a dual meet with Floyd Central, he broke his own school record in the discus with a toss of 181-05.00. He topped himself yet again in both events during the Jeffersonville Boys Invitational on May 5 setting school marks of 181-08 in the discus and 62-05.50 in the shot. For his efforts, he was named athlete of the meet.

 

·         Alissa Whitaker of Frontier pitched a no-hitter in a 1-0 victory over defending 2A state champion Hanover Central on April 7.

 

·         On May 7, Indianapolis Scecina junior third baseman Amber Wolf slugged three home runs in one day as the Crusaders posted 7-0 and 3-0 wins over Indianapolis Bishop Chatard and Heritage Christian, respectively, on their way to their second consecutive City Tournament title.
