TRACK AND FIELD, GIRLS TENNIS SECTIONALS BEGIN THIS WEEK

Sectional action in the 32nd Annual Girls Track and Field State Tournament Series begins at 32 sites around the state today, while boys sectionals in the 102nd Annual State Tournament Series get underway this Thursday also at 32 locales.

 

Official results from each site will be posted the day after the event to the IHSAA website on each sport’s respective page.

 

The top four places in all individual events and relays plus any individual or relay team meeting the 3 Participant Standard (PDF) in the sectional finals of their event will advance to the regional level, while the top three will advance from regionals to the state meet. The eight girls regionals are Tuesday, May 24 and their state meet is set for Saturday, June 4. The eight boys regionals will be contested Thursday, May 26 with qualifiers entered into the state meet which will be run Friday, June 3.

 

Also beginning this week is the 31st Annual Girls Team Tennis State Tournament Series. Schedules and results from each of the 64 sites are available on the girls tennis page of the IHSAA website and will be updated throughout the week as they become available. Sectional winners will advance to one of 16 regionals scheduled for May 24-25.

 

Following the team sectionals, any No. 1 singles player or doubles team undefeated in post-season action will advance to the Individual Singles and Doubles State Tournament May 24 and 25. Those matches will be played concurrently at the team regional sites.

Pairings for the 39th Annual Baseball State Tournament Series will be drawn this Thursday, May 19 beginning at 8 a.m. in the Assembly Room of the IHSAA Office in Indianapolis. The three remaining games would then be played in order on Saturday, June 18 beginning at 10:30 am with the others to start no earlier than 2:00 pm and 5:30 pm. Should all four games be played on Saturday, June 18, Class A would begin at 9:30 am with Classes 2A, 3A and 4A approximately 40 minutes after the preceding game.

FIRST PITCH IN SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT NEXT MONDAY

A field of 365 teams will begin play next Monday, May 23 in the 21st Annual IHSAA Softball State Tournament Series.

 

For the second year, the tournament will be conducted with 64 sectionals in four different classes. Sectional play is scheduled to continue through the course of the week concluding on Saturday, May 28. Daily schedules for each tournament site are listed as part of the sectionals brackets in PDF. Because of possible weather postponements and other conflicts, it is advised to check with the host school for precise day and time schedules.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

 

  • Justin Burkett of Wes-Del pitched a no-hitter as Wes-Del completed a doubleheader sweep over Knightstown on May 7.

 

  • In the May 16 issue of Sports Illustrated, the country’s top 25 high school athletic programs were included according to research. Two Indiana high schools were mentioned including Carmel at No. 10 while Ben Davis was listed at No. 21. The magazine emphasized all-around excellence over the past 10 years and included state championships won and college athletes produced as criteria.

 

  • Kyle Cook of Jimtown cleared 14 feet, 2 inches to set a Northern State Conference meet record in the pole vault on May 12.

 

  • The 4 x 800 meter relay team for Brown County which consists of Holly Fisher, Justina Peters, Brittney Wagler, and Jenny Kulow broke the Western Indiana Conference and school record with a time of 10:12.29.

 

  • Northridge’s 4 x 800 meter relay team consisting of freshman Melissa Kauffman, sophomore Aimee Gingerich, and juniors Lynn Pezzanite and Megan Jackson broke the Northern Lakes Conference meet record on May 11, with a time of 9:20.66.  The previous standard was 9:29.77 set in last year’s meet by Northridge’s team.

 

  • River Forest’s Rachel Lightfoot went 5-for-6 in a pair of softball games with Elkhart Central on May 7 on her way to breaking the school record for career hits with 74.  The previous record was 71 held by Brooke Ostrander.

 

  • Tri High School hired Shawn Means as its new varsity boys basketball coach.  He comes from Delphi where he served as an assistant basketball coach for the past three seasons.  He is replacing Don Schwarzkopf who is retiring after 43 years in education and 16 years as basketball coach.  Coach Schwarzkopf won three sectional titles in 1976, 1977 and 2005.

 

  • Marty Rasala of Kouts struck out four on his way to throwing a no-hitter in a 6-0 shutout of Calumet on May 13.

 

  • High school football players that advance to next year’s state finals or have a regular season game scheduled in the RCA Dome in Indianapolis will be playing on a new surface. The Indianapolis Colts are in the process of replacing the old surface, Astro-Turf-12, with FieldTurf, a synthetic, natural grass-like surface used in many NFL stadiums said to be softer and less abrasive. The Colts are the ninth NFL team to install FieldTurf in their playing facility, joining St. Louis, Detroit, Seattle, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Minnesota, New York Jets and New York Giants. The only NFL domed stadium not to use FieldTurf is New Orleans, which uses Sportexe Momentum.

 

  • Hauser junior pitcher Aryn Ross threw his second consecutive no-hitter helping Hauser knock off South Decatur, 10-0.  Ross struck out 12 hitters in the five-inning victory on May 9.

 

  • West Vigo has named a new basketball coach for the 2005-06 seasonTommy Thornton, a 1989 graduate of the school and an assistant last year, will take over the reigns as head coach for the boys team.

 

  • Michigan City Marquette has hired a new boys basketball head coach for the 2005-06 season.  Duane Ticknor, a former coach of the Gary Steelheads of the CBA, will take over for the Blazers.  Ticknor has experience coaching at the high school, college, and professional levels compiling a total record of 431-317.
