SOFTBALL SECTIONALS UNDERWAY THIS WEEK

Sectional action in the 21st Annual State Softball Tournament Series began yesterday at several of the 64 sites. Scores and any schedule changes will be added to the IHSAA website throughout the week as they become available from the host sites. Because of possible weather postponements and other conflicts, it is advised to check with the host school for precise day and time schedules.

 

Among the top-ranked teams in each class, 4A defending champion Lake Central begins its tournament run against host Highland in the bye game of that sectional on Thursday; Pendleton Heights also drew a bye and will start off against Hamilton Heights in the 3A sectional at Mt. Vernon (Fortville) tonight; host Eastern (Greentown) shut out Oak Hill, 3-0, in its opener on Monday afternoon and; Clinton Prairie hosts Rossville this afternoon in the first semifinal game of its own five-team sectional in Class A.

 

Also, besides Lake Central, the other three defending state champions were in action yesterday. Class 3A champ New Palestine shut out host Mt. Vernon (Fortville), 7-0; 2A titlist Hanover Central edged Boone Grove, 2-0, in nine innings at Hammond Bishop Noll and; Class A winner Indianapolis Lutheran triumphed 11-1 at home over Covenant Christian.

BASEBALL SECTIONALS BEGIN MEMORIAL DAY

The 39th Annual IHSAA Baseball State Tournament Series begins as 64 sectionals get underway next Monday, May 30 and concluding Saturday, June 4. This year’s field includes 374 teams in four different classes. Scores and any schedule changes will be added to the IHSAA website throughout the week as they become available from the host sites. Because of possible weather postponements and other conflicts, it is advised to check with the host school for precise day and time schedules.

 

Among the top-ranked teams in each class, Brownsburg (4A) will face Zionsville in the first round at Avon; Andrean (3A) drew the bye into the semifinals at Kankakee Valley; South Knox (2A) will meet host Eastern Greene in the first round and; Lafayette Central Catholic (A) will meet Frontier in the opening game at Carroll (Flora).

GIRLS TENNIS

 

GIRLS TENNIS REGIONALS THIS WEEK, SEMI-STATES SATURDAY

The 31st Annual Girls Team Tennis Tournament has moved to its regional round this week with matches scheduled for today and Wednesday at 16 sites listed below. Due to a scheduling conflict with graduation ceremonies, the Vincennes Lincoln Regional will be played Wednesday and Thursday. The four teams at each site will battle through semifinals and a championship match to determine which teams will move to semi-state play this Saturday.

 

The semi-state round will be contested at four sites – Carroll (Fort Wayne), Jasper, LaPorte and North Central of Indianapolis. The four teams entered at each site will play semifinals at 10 a.m. with the winners returning for a 2 p.m. championship match and chance to play in the state finals at North Central High School in Indianapolis on Saturday, June 4.

The girls track and field regionals take place today at eight sites around the state with qualifiers advancing to the state meet in Bloomington on Saturday, June 4.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

 

·         McCutcheon beat South Bend Adams, 11-0, in five innings on May 14 behind freshman pitcher Tori Collins and her first career no-hitter.  The victory also gave head coach Jim Bates his 400th career victory, giving him a total record of 400-137 in 20 years.

 

·         Bryce Brown of Evansville Harrison broke multiple records at the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference meet at Castle on May 13.  Brown started off by breaking his own SIAC meet record in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 36.87 surpassing the mark of 39.26 he set last year in the same meet.  Brown also went on to break the meet record in the 100 meter high hurdles with a time of 14.41 eclipsing the time of 14.86 set by Evansville Bosse’s Howard Harper in 2002.  He then ended his night helping Harrison’s 4 x 100 relay team break the 15-year-old record with a time of 42.34.

 

·         Wabash senior Kyle Cantrell set the Central Indiana Conference discus record with a throw of 183' 6". Cantrell broke his own record by almost 20 feet.

 

·         Marion’s Megan Flynn broke a 23-year-old record at the Bremen Girls Track and Field Sectional on May 17.  Flynn won the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.54.

 

·         Brandon Herrold of Caston is the only athlete in the Midwest Conference to ever win three MVP awards in a year.  He was the Football Player of the Year, Basketball Player of the Year two years in a row, and was the conference golf medalist on Saturday, May 14.  Brandon also was the leading tackler in the state, named to the North All Star team for the game in July and will play football for St. Francis.

 

·         South Decatur beat Shawe Memorial, 12-0, behind pitcher Laura Huff’s first career no-hitter on May 17.  Huff struck out eight batters in five innings.

 

·         Fountain Central named Brad Odom as its new girls basketball head coach for the 2005-06 season. Odom is currently the JV baseball coach and has coached in the boys’ basketball program at the 8th grade level.  He has coached volleyball as well.

 

·         Andrean beat Munster, 12-1, in the Lake Athletic Conference tournament on May 20 giving Andrean head baseball coach Dave Pishkur his 600th win in his 26 years of coaching.

 

·         Adam Trusty of North Judson threw a five inning; 10-strikeout no-hitter on May 14 helping the Bluejays beat Knox 12-0.
