SOFTBALL STATE SEMIFINALS BEGIN FRIDAY EVENING

Only one defending state champion returns to the 21st Annual IHSAA Softball State Finals, but all four top-ranked teams in their respective state polls made it to this weekend’s festivities.

Two semifinal games at four different sites will be played this Friday beginning at 6:30 p.m. The second games will not begin any earlier than 8:30 p.m. The sites of the semifinals are as follows: Carmel hosting Class 4A, Pike hosting 3A, North Central the site for 2A and Hamilton Southeastern the site for Class A. Saturday’s four state championship games will be played at the Ben Davis High School Softball Complex in Indianapolis for the first time after serving as site of last year’s 4A semifinal games. The Class A championship contest is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. The 2A final is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., 3A at 4:30 p.m. and 4A at 7:30 p.m.

Class 4A No. 1 Lake Central is the only defending champion to return but the Indians are joined by fellow top-ranked squads in Pendleton Heights (3A), Eastern (Greentown) (2A) and Clinton Prairie (A).

In the 4A tournament, Lake Central will make a record-tying ninth appearance in the state finals this weekend, its fifth straight, and will be going after the school’s record-tying fourth title. The Indians will take on McCutcheon, a first-time visitor to this level of the tournament. The two teams met in Lafayette on April 16 with Lake Central taking a 7-0 decision. In the other half of the bracket, Brownsburg and Martinsville, both tied for third in the final regular season poll, will meet. The Bulldogs are making their first trip to state, while Martinsville was a 2004 participant which fell in the Friday semis.

The Class 3A pairings also feature three of the top four teams with unranked Bellmont and Pendleton Heights in the opener. Bellmont is another returnee from last year, its fourth trip overall including its 1989 state runner-up season, while Pendleton Heights is back for the second time in three years. The Arabians were the 2001 state runner-up in Class 3A when the tournament was conducted in just three classes. The second game features No. 4 Gibson Southern and No. 2 Andrean. Gibson Southern is back for the third consecutive year and is two years removed from its 2A title season. Andrean, the 1998 2A champ, returns for the first time since its 1999 runner-up season.

In 2A, ninth-ranked Frankton is chasing its second softball title and returns to state for the first time since its championship season of 2000. The Eagles were a Class A team at that time. They’ll face Bremen in the first game at North Central High School on Friday. The Lions fell to eventual state champ Hanover Central by a 1-0 count in last year’s regional but turned the tables this time winning a 1-0 contest in nine innings last Saturday to earn the trip to state. The second game pits Providence against Eastern of Greentown. Providence is fresh off its first sectional championship in softball and a pair of shutouts at Saturday’s regional has the Pioneers in the state finals where they’ll face the top-ranked Comets. Eastern returns for the second time in three seasons after winning the Class A state tournament in 2003.

The Class A tournament at Hamilton Southeastern will start out with No. 1 Clinton Prairie against fourth-ranked Lanesville. Clinton Prairie made the most of its only previous journey to the state finals winning the small-school tournament in 2002. Lanesville won a regional for the first time on Saturday putting the Eagles in a state finals tournament for the first time in school history in any team sport (soccer, volleyball, football, basketball, softball or baseball). Game two features North Daviess and Pioneer. And just like Lanesville, North Daviess made school history as well by pitching a pair of shutouts in Saturday’s regional action. The 2005 Cougars are the school’s first state qualifier in a team sport. Pioneer has reached this level of the tournament twice before but will be looking to get over the semifinal hurdle that tripped the 2001 and 2002 teams.

GIRLS TENNIS

STATE SINGLES AND DOUBLES CHAMPS TO BE CROWNED SATURDAY

Five repeat entrants from last year’s state singles tournament make up the seven participants in this year’s bracket, while two teams return in the doubles tournament as the IHSAA Individual Girls Tennis State Finals play out Friday and Saturday at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

Three quarterfinal singles matches are scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m., while the first round of the doubles tournament, with 10 teams involved, will serve it up beginning at 10 a.m.

On the singles side, with defending state singles champion Sophie Grabinski of Carmel opting to play her senior year on the junior circuit, the door is open for several others. Six of the seven singles participants are just sophomores, including Munster’s Maureen Modesto who finished as the runner-up to Grabinski in 2004. She’ll face sophomore Haley Hall of Delta in the quarterfinal round. Two others back for more include Clarksville sophomore Tiffany Welcher and Lora Dushanova, a senior from the Culver Academies who will meet in the quarters.

Earning a bye into the semifinals and fresh off helping her team capture the state championship last Saturday is sophomore Megan Martzolf of Park Tudor. Martzolf, who lost to Grabinski in last year’s semifinals, has the bloodlines as her sister, Katie, is one of two tennis players to win four straight IHSAA singles titles (1998-2001).

The doubles bracket features last year’s state runner-up team of senior Megan Farley and junior Melanie Sullivan of Center Grove. The senior pair of Brittany Fitzpatrick and Carolyn Pyszka representing Mishawaka Marian also return to take another crack at it after falling in last year’s opening round.

Freshman Abby Greif and senior Catherine Hofmann of Evansville Memorial, who helped the Tigers to a state runner-up finish last Saturday in the team competition, earned a bye into the quarterfinals along with senior Anne Pennington and freshman Alena Perez-Majul of  North Central of Indianapolis.
