IHSAA ANNOUNCES “HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT”

Indiana High School Athletic Association Commissioner Blake Ress has announced the introduction of a new statewide radio program titled IHSAA High School Sports Report.

 

The 15-minute show will be updated weekly, showcasing athletes and events throughout the state.  Sports commentator and former coach Bob Lovell will host the show, with input from schools and media outlets throughout Indiana.  The production is designed to be broadcast on Thursday or Friday nights, thus setting the state for another exciting weekend of high school sports.

 

Associated Sports Productions, Inc., broadcast arm of the IHSAA, will act as the executive producer of the program and, at this time, has announced the commitment of 39 radio outlets to carry the show.

2004-05 STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE ANNOUNCED

Indiana High School Athletic Association Assistant Commissioner Sandy Searcy today announced the names of the students who have been selected to serve on the 2004-05 IHSAA Student Advisory Committee.  The 18-member committee is patterned after the current IHSAA Board of Directors’ representation of class, district and diverse populations of the IHSAA membership.

The Student Advisory Committee has formulated a mission statement outlining its role as an IHSAA advisory group:

 

The Student Advisory Committee is a diverse, dynamic group of student athletes focused on providing a means of education and communication for its constituency.  The group serves as a conduit between student athletes, administrators and the Executive Committee of the IHSAA.  The Student Advisory Committee promotes all standing ideals of the IHSAA, including leadership, sportsmanship and integrity.

 

The first meeting of the 2004 Student Advisory Committee will be held at the IHSAA offices on August 29 at 12:00 p.m.

 

PROJECT XL UNDERWAY FOR 2004-05

Project XL is a creative arts competition by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, allowing high school authors, poets, artists, songwriters, filmmakers and performers the opportunity to express themselves on topics of interest and vital importance to Indiana teenagers.

 

This is the 16th year that Project XL has invited every Indiana high school student to express himself or herself on a relevant issue. During the 2003-2004 Project XL competition, more than 6,000 students from 245 Indiana high schools and home schools participated in Project XL, taking home $41,500 in scholarship money.

 

The 2004/2005 Project XL topic is IMAGINATION. Teachers, parents, and students are encouraged to call 1-800-866-1160, extension 7748 for more information about Project XL and to answer questions concerning categories, rules and deadlines, Farm Bureau Insurance drop-off sites, judging the state finals program, or any other aspect of the competition.

FOUR ADDITIONAL IHSAA SPORTS BEGIN SEASON

Monday, August 16, was the date for the first contest for four IHSAA sanctioned sports:  Boys Tennis; Boys/Girls Cross Country; Boys/Girls Soccer; and Volleyball.

 

State tournaments will begin on September 30 in boys tennis, October 11 in soccer, October 12 in cross country and October 21 in volleyball.

 

Girls golf, which has also begun its season, begins tourney action on September 17.  The IHSAA football campaign kicks off on Friday, with tournament play slated to begin on October 22.

MILESTONES

Mike Moore, boys golf coach at Noblesville, has been selected as 2004 Ball State University

Alumnus Boys Golf Coach of the Year.

 

Katie Gearlds, the 2003 Indiana Miss Basketball, has been named to the Women’s John r. Wooden Award Pre-Seson All-American Team.  Gearlds is a sophomore at Purdue University.

 

Terre Haute South will name its football field after its first and winningest coach, Bob Clements, in ceremonies on August 20.

 

Iesha Efion, a senior at Bloomington North, has been invited to join the Nigerian women‘s national soccer program.

 

IHSAA OVERTIME

Kent Chezem has been named boys basketball coach at Covington.  He spent the last 10 seasons at Clinton Prairie.

 

Craig Howe, the former head girls coach at Lebanon, has been named the new boys and girls swim coach at Brebeuf Jesuit. 

 

Sam Burke has announced his retirement from teaching and coaching at Vincennes Lincoln High School.  He had been the varsity boys track coach at the school for 25 years.

 

Tipton hired Travis Daugherty as its new boys basketball coach.  He replaces Mike McBride, who resigned after four years with the Blue Devils.

 

Dave Mundy has resigned as baseball coach at Sheridan.

 

Rex Wilson has accepted the boys basketball coaching position at Indian Creek.

 

Fort Wayne Wayne has announced that boys basketball coach Murray Mendenhall will take a one-year leave of absence, but will remain as the school’s interim athletic director.

 

Joey Hart is the new boys basketball coach and athletic director Turkey Run.  He replaces Jeff Thompson on the sideline.

 

Southwestern (Shelbyville) has named Jason Bass as its new AD, replacing Tim Jordan, who moves to North Decatur as assistant principal and athletic director.

 

After 18 seasons, Brian Abbott has resigned as baseball coach at Eastbrook.
