BOYS TENNIS TEAM STATE FINALS SATURDAY

The state finals in the 38th Annual IHSAA Boys Tennis Tournament will be conducted on October 16 at North Central (Indpls.) High School.  The morning session will begin at 10:00, with the afternoon session at 2:00.  There is no admission charge.

 

PAIRINGS

Terre Haute North (17-2) vs. Penn (15-0)

Carmel (19-0) vs. Delta (25-0)

 

Carmel is the only former team state champ in this year’s finals field, having won titles in 1980-81-87 under Lee Lonzo, and in 2003 under Mike Bostic.  The Greyhounds were also state runner-up to Marion in 1991.  Terre Haute North was runner-up to Center Grove in 2001.

The regional round of the IHSAA Boys Tennis Singles/Doubles Tournament will played in conjunction with the team championships on Saturday at North Central (Indpls.) High School.  The pairings are on the IHSAA website at 2004 IHSAA Boys Tennis Singles-Doubles Regional Pairings.

 

The singles/doubles state finals are slated for Friday and Saturday, October 22-23, at Park Tudor High School, Indianapolis.

 

2004 SOCCER TOURNEY UNDERWAY

The 11th Annual IHSAA Boys and Girls Soccer Tournaments are now underway, with sectional action slated to continue through Saturday,  Regional action is scheduled for October 19 (girls) and 20 (boys), with the semi-states on October 23 and the state finals on October 30.

SOCCER ACADEMIC ALL-STATE TEAMS ANNOUNCED

The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has announced its selections for the 2004 Soccer Academic All-State Teams.  That list is available on the IHSAA website at 2004 ICGSA Academic All-State Teams.

 

2004 IHSAA FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT DRAW AVAILABLE

Pairings for the 32nd Annual IHSAA Football Tournament Series are available now on the IHSAA website, in HTML format under 2004 IHSAA Football Pairings-HTML or in bracket form at 2004 IHSAA Football Pairings-Brackets.

 

This year’s tournament will begin Friday, October 22.  The state finals are set for November 26-27 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

2004 VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT PAIRINGS ON-LINE

The pairings for the 33d Annual IHSAA Volleyball Tournament Series were decided yesterday at the IHSAA offices and are available on the web at 2004 IHSAA Volleyball Tourney Draw.

 

Class 4A defending state champion Indianapolis Cathedral will open up against Lawrence Central as the Irish host their own sectional.  The 2003 3A winner, Brebeuf Jesuit, will also play host to sectional action and meet Lebanon.  The class 2A defending champ, Muncie Burris, travels to Eastern Hancock to take on Knightstown.  In Class A, Morristown, the 2003 winner, will host its own sectional at will meet Morton Memorial in its initial challenge.

 

The state tourney gets underway on October 21.  The state finals will be conducted November 6.

CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS BEGIN TODAY

The girls and boys cross country tournaments begin today at 32 sectional sites across the state.  The regional round of action is set for Saturday, October 16, with the semi-states on Saturday, October 23, and the state finals on Saturday, October 30 at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

BRUCE WHITEHEAD NAMED NIAAA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Bruce Whitehead, who spent 25 years as a high school athletic director in Indiana and who has been involved with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) for the past 25 years, has been selected to lead the NIAAA as executive director, effective January 1, 2005.

 

Whitehead retired from Crawfordsville High School in 2001 after a 33-year career, including the final 25 years as athletic director, and has served the past three years as an administrative assistant with the NIAAA.

 

A 1968 graduate of Purdue University, Whitehead went directly from West Lafayette to Crawfordsville and served in a variety of positions until his retirement three years ago.  While serving as athletic director at Crawfordsville High School, Whitehead hosted more than 150 tournament events for the IHSAA.

STATE TRACK & FIELD FINALS RETURN TO I.U.

By a unanimous vote of approval from the Indiana High School Athletic Association Executive Committee on October 7, 2004, in their regularly scheduled monthly meeting at the IHSAA offices in Indianapolis, the IHSAA Boys & Girls Track and Field Championship Finals will return to the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington next June 3-4, 2004.

 

The 2004 meet was contested on the I.U. campus as part of its Centennial Celebration, commemorating the 1904 Track and Field Championship, which was held at Jordan Field on the I.U. campus on May 14 of that year.

APPROVE 2005 BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SITE

Assistant Commissioner Cox presented proposals from Indiana University and IUPUI to host the 2005-09 Boys and Girls Track and Field State Championships.  After discussion, a motion to award the hosting of the Boys and Girls Track and Field State Championships to Indiana University was made by Randy Barrett; seconded by Jim Feist; motion passed 17-0.

Concord has named Mike Jackowiak as baseball coach.

 

Mark Branstad will be the new boys track coach at Franklin Central. He replaces Jim Hoskins who spent 13 years in that position.

 

Carmel boys basketball coach Mark Galloway has been inducted into the Bethel College Athletic Hall of Fame.

 

Bill Patrick, boys basketball coach at Tippecanoe Valley, is the 2004 recipient of the Manchester College M Association Claude Wolfe Award for coaching excellence.

 

Larry Lael is expected to be named the boys basketball coach at Whitko during the school board’s next meeting on October 18, replacing Don Zawlocki, who resigned following the 2003-04 season.
