GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVING STATE FINALS THIS WEEKEND

Four defending state champions, one state title winner from two years ago and the possibility of a second winner from 2004 qualifying at tonight’s diving regional highlight the individuals that make up the field in the 32nd Annual IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals this weekend. Also of interest is the annual question of whether Carmel will continue to add to its record run of state titles.

Preliminary swimming heats get underway Friday night at 6 p.m. EST / 5 p.m. CST at the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI in Indianapolis. The top 16 in each event will return for competition on Saturday with the top eight individuals vying for state championship honors. Those finishing nine through 16 on Friday will make up the competitors in the consolation heats. All diving will take place on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. EST / 8 a.m. CST with the top 21 of 32 competitors advancing from the prelims to the semis after five dives each. After three dives each in the semis, the top 16 will advance to the final round for another three dives each. All championship and consolation finals, including diving, will commence at 1:05 p.m. EST / 12:05 p.m. CST on Saturday.

Sophomore Michelle McKeehan of Center Grove returns as the top seed in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, events she won in her first year on the scene and dominated in Saturday’s Indian Creek Sectional. She was one of two double winners at last year’s state meet and became the first freshman to win two individual titles since Lacey Boutwell of Noblesville pulled it off in 1997-98 and just the third overall. McKeehan is also eligible to participate in two of Center Grove’s three qualified relay teams.

Yorktown senior Maggie Bird comes in as the third seed in the 200 Freestyle after winning the event a year ago. She’s a double threat as well as she’s seeded second in the 500 freestyle and is entered in two relays that helped the Tigers to a runner-up finish at Hamilton Southeastern over the weekend. Another senior, Alyssa Rosinko of Carmel, returns to defend last year’s crown in the 100 butterfly. She qualified with the eighth-best time and is also among the participants in the 50 freestyle as well as two Greyhound relay teams.

Ariel Martin of Jeffersonville, who won the 100 backstroke last year, is also back seeking more success. The junior clocked the seventh-best time in the state on Saturday, but also managed the third best showing in the 50 freestyle with the hopes of doing one better in that event after her state runner-up performance last season to departed Taylor Baughman of Carmel. Martin is also eligible to participate in two relays.

Also in the field is Chesterton junior Christy Grcevich, the 2004 champ in the 100 butterfly. Grcevich finished sixth in the event last year and qualified 18th over the weekend. She’s also entered in the 50 freestyle and is expected to see action in the relays for the Trojans as well.

Last year’s state champion in one meter diving, Kelci Bryant of Harrison (West Lafayette) is not participating in the state tournament this year opting to compete at the national level. Her departure opens the door for 2004 state champion Brittany Feldman, a senior from Indianapolis Broad Ripple. Feldman finished as the state runner-up last year in competition that went down to the last dive. Feldman won the event at the Carmel Sectional last Saturday and will compete in the Hamilton Southeastern regional later today. Like all divers at the regional level, she needs to finish in the top eight at that site to advance to the state finals. Other sites hosting diving regionals tonight include Bloomington North, Mishawaka and Zionsville.

In the team competition, Carmel will attempt to extend its IHSAA record string of state championships to 20 consecutive years after claiming its 22nd straight sectional title on Saturday. Only seven state title streaks in any sport are longer than the Greyhounds’ run and it’s the longest active streak in the nation. Top-ranked in the final coaches association poll, the Greyhounds won all but one swimming event in their own sectional on Saturday racking up 398 points. They have three individuals that enter the meet as the top seeds in their respective event as well as the fastest time in all three relay events.

Not including any diving qualifers, Carmel tops all teams with 22 individual swims and is followed by Hamilton Southeastern with 16, Homestead and North Central (Indianapolis) with 15 each and Columbus North with 13. All five schools also have entrants in all three relays.

Also of note is this event will be the last for Franklin girls and boys coach Kurt Hass who has announced his retirement. Hass, who has spent the last 33 years guiding the Grizzly Cub programs, has been selected the state diving coach of the year twice, elected by coaches to judge state diving 20 times and has instructed six diving state champions.

Semifinals are scheduled for Friday and championship games on Saturday night. Sectional champions will advance to regional play on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 16 sites.

NEW CREDENTIAL POLICY FOR INDIVIDUAL WRESTLING STATE FINALS

For the first time, news media interested in covering the IHSAA Individual Wrestling State Finals will be required to apply for credentials to this year’s event on Feb. 17-18. The generic state finals media credential issued earlier this year will NOT allow admission as in previous years – no exceptions.

Interested media should fax a request on company letterhead to IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at 317-575-4244. Requests via e-mail will not be accepted. Please include the names of the individuals to be credentialed limiting your requests to legitimate, working members of the media. The application deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. EST / 3 p.m. CST. Credentials are not transferable from person to person and unauthorized usage may result in revocation of credential privileges. Also, children will not be granted credentials and should not be brought to the venue.

Approved requests may be claimed at media will-call at Conseco Fieldhouse on the days of the event. As a friendly reminder, the IHSAA does not issue credentials to sectional, regional or semi-state competitions. In those cases, please contact the host school’s athletic department.

Those outlets wishing to broadcast any level of any IHSAA tournament event should contact Mark Higdon of Associated Sports Productions at 317-633-1456 to make advance arrangements.

NOTE: This new policy does not affect the Team Wrestling State Finals at Center Grove High School on Saturday, Feb. 25. The generic 2005-06 IHSAA State Finals Media Credential, issued earlier this year for other state finals events, will continue to allow admission to that event as in previous years.

MISCELLANEOUS

PLYMOUTH’S TONY ROSS NAMED IHSAA MEDIA SERVICE AWARD WINNER

Tony Ross, Sports Director for WTCA in Plymouth, has been selected as the 2005-06 recipient of the IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award for District I.

Ross will be honored Tuesday, Feb. 14 in a special ceremony during the Plymouth-Culver Academies boys basketball game at Plymouth High School. IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress will be on hand along with school principal Dick Tobias, a member of the IHSAA Board of Directors.

Ross has been associated with WTCA since 1991, including the last 10 as its sports director. The station was one of the early pioneers of broadcasting high school sports on the internet and also added baseball, girls basketball, soccer, volleyball and softball to its tradition of carrying Plymouth football and boys basketball games. WTCA now airs over 100 different Plymouth sporting events during the course of a school year to its listeners.

In the midst of his 14 years with the station, Ross earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Purdue University in 1995. During his time there, he was elected President of the National Broadcast Society, hosting a couple of television shows with Cox Communications and calling play-by-play for some sporting events they sponsored. He also worked for WGLM radio in West Lafayette.

Ross is a 1988 graduate of Knox High School where he got his start working as the public address announcer for Redskins boys and girls basketball games. He went on to work for WKVI radio in Knox as an on-air personality for three years before joining WTCA. He lists Joe McConnell (Purdue Play-by-Play), Vin Scully (Dodgers Play-by-Play) and Don Fisher (IU Play-by-Play) as announcers he’s studied and considers inspirational.

“I am honored to receive this award,” Ross said. “I'm a "firm" believer of ‘Hard Work + Effort = Quality Performance’. One common theme amongst all of (the broadcasters listed above) is their passion for the game, the players and the fans. That's why every broadcast I produce shows that passion. Otherwise, I do my profession, the players and fans a disservice.”

Ross is also the third recipient of this award from WTCA. The IHSAA honored Rick Derf and Corky Lingle in 1995-96.

This is the 22nd year the IHSAA has recognized an outstanding member of the Indiana news media from each of the three IHSAA legislative districts for their excellence in the coverage of high school sports. District I covers 22 counties across northern Indiana. Ross is the second honoree of this school year joining Lance Wilkerson of News 25 (WEHT-TV ABC) in Evansville, the District III recipient. The District II honoree will be announced in the coming days.

On behalf of its 400 member schools, the Indiana High School Athletic Association is pleased to salute Tony Ross and recognize his dedicated service to high school athletics in the state of Indiana.

Previous award winners from north central Indiana include:

Leroy Lambright, Goshen News, 1985-86
