FIVE RETURNING CHAMPS HEADLINE INDIVIDUAL WRESTLING STATE FINALS

Five returning state champions from 2005, three of which will wrestle in the 119 pound class, highlight the field of participants in the 68th Annual IHSAA Individual Wrestling State Finals this weekend at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Two hundred twenty-four wrestlers in all, 16 in each of the 14 weight classes, will begin first round competition on Friday at 6 p.m. EST / 5 p.m. CST. First-round winners will return to wrestle on Saturday with quarterfinal action beginning at 9:30 a.m. EST / 8:30 a.m. CST and semifinal matches to follow after all weight classes have concluded. Consolation bouts begin at 5 p.m. and championship matches under the spotlight are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Evansville Central’s Anthony Williams (30-3) is back to defend the 119 pound crown he won a year ago but he’ll have plenty of competition in his weight class including last year’s 103 and 112 pound winners who sit in the other half of the bracket. Ethan Harris of Beech Grove, last year’s 112 pound champ, is one of 19 competitors sporting an unbeaten record at these finals. He enters at 33-0 after finishing 42-0 last season. Hobart’s Eric Galka, who went unbeaten in his freshman campaign at 103, is 20-5.

Also back to defend the same titles are Perry Meridian’s Nick Walpole and Bloomington South’s Paul Young, both seniors whose teams also have advanced to next week’s Team Wrestling State Finals. Walpole, who put together a 53-0 slate in winning 140 last year, boasts a 51-0 mark this time around. He is one of three unbeatens at his weight, the most in any class. Young, who faltered only once in 49 matches last season on his way to the 160 crown, is 45-0.

Eight wrestlers who have fallen short in a championship match over the last two years also return, seven of which remain unbeaten to date. Among them is Merrillville’s Dexter Larimore at 275. The 37-0 senior hopes to take the final step after finishing second each of the last two years in the heavyweight class.

Mishawaka and Perry Meridian lead all comers with seven entries each while Bellmont, Hobart and Merrillville have six each. Merrillville and Mishawaka each had four semi-state champions, the most of the 116 schools represented. Forty wrestlers at this weekend’s tournament are expected to participate in next Saturday’s team finals.

During the championship round only on Saturday night will credentialed photographers be allowed inside the hockey boards to shoot action mat-side. Other than that, only participants, coaches and fieldhouse workers will have access to the mat area.

Programs: Copies of the official program containing brackets for each weight class and some tournament history will be available in the Media Work Room free of charge.

Results: Will be updated continuously throughout both days of the tournament on the IHSAA website at www.ihsaa.org. Copies of the updated brackets will also be available in the media work room throughout the two days.
