THE ROAD TO CONSECO FIELDHOUSE REVEALED

A field of 393 teams and 5,626 participants are entered as the 96th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament Series tips off next week at 64 sectional sites. One site, Class A, Sectional 56 with nine teams at Lapel, will get action underway on Monday, Feb. 27 with the majority of sites scheduled to begin the following night. Sectional play continues through the week with championship games set for Saturday, March 4. The two-round regionals are slated for March 11, followed by one-game semi-states on March 18 with the winners earning a spot in the state finals at Conseco Fieldhouse on March 25. In all, 389 games will be played over the four-week tournament.

 

At the state finals, there will be a championship game in each of the four classes, beginning with Class A at 10:36 a.m. EST and followed immediately by the Class 2A game. After a mid-afternoon break, the second session will begin with the Class 3A championship game at 6:06 p.m. EST, followed by the Class 4A championship game.

 

Among the defending state champions, Lapel will meet the winner of the Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter-Eminence game on Thursday in Class A, Sectional 56; In 2A, Forest Park will open play Friday against the winner of the Tell City-Southridge contest in Sectional 48; In Class 3A, Washington will face Gibson Southern on Friday in the semi-finals of Sectional 31 and; Lawrence North opens Sectional 10 play Tuesday against Indianapolis Arlington.

 

Four member schools will be making their first appearance in the boys’ basketball state tournament including Bethesda Christian (Sectional 56 at Lapel), Liberty Christian (Sectional 54 at Southern Wells), Trinity Lutheran (Sectional 59 at Orleans) and University (Sectional 56 at Lapel). Each is assigned to Class A.

 

In sectional play, Evansville Mater Dei and Tecumseh currently lead the state with seven consecutive championships each. Mater Dei has won four of those in Class 3A (their current class) while the other three came as a 2A team. Tecumseh’s have each come in Class A. Also, Covington (A) has won five straight and Lafayette Central Catholic (A) has won four in a row.

 

As for all-time leaders in sectional championships, Kokomo won its record 69th championship last season. The Wildkats are followed by Vincennes Lincoln with 68, Marion with 63, Lafayette Jefferson with 59 and Richmond with 58.

 

Sectional Formats

5-Team Fields

Will play one first-round game on Tuesday at 7 p.m., two semifinals games on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Note: The team drawing the first-round bye will play the Tuesday night winner in the second semifinal game on Friday.

 

6-Team Fields

Will play two first-round games on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m. (except as noted), two semifinals on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Note: The two teams drawing first-round byes will play in the second semifinal game on Friday.

 

7-Team Fields

Will play one first-round game on Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m., two games on Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m., two semifinals on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

 

8-Team Fields

Will play two first-round games on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m., two games on Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m., two semifinals on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

 

9-Team Fields

Will play one first round game on Monday beginning at 7 p.m., two games on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m., two games on Thursday beginning at 6 p.m., two semifinals on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

 

Two Sectionals Will Play First-Round Games at Multiple Sites

In the East Chicago Central and Michigan City sectionals, the host school for the first round is determined by the draw. The second-named team in each first-round pairing will host a game with the semifinals and championship games to be played at East Chicago Central and Michigan City, respectively.
