FIELD OF 64 HEADS TO REGIONAL ROUND ON SATURDAY

Three first-time sectional champions lead the charge into the regional round of the 96th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament. Two semifinal games followed by an evening championship game are scheduled for 16 sites this Saturday with survivors earning a berth in the semi-state round on Saturday, March 18.

 

Lanesville (20-3), whose tournament history dates all the way back to the 1925 New Albany sectional when it was known as Franklin Township, cut down the sectional championship nets for the first time in school history over the weekend. The Class A Eagles survived a two-point overtime affair with Christian Academy of Indiana in Friday’s semifinals and edged host Borden by a single point in the final game. Lanesville will take on Hauser (21-2) in Saturday’s Class A regional at Franklin.

 

Conversely, winning a sectional championship in its very first year of tournament eligibility was reality for University (16-7) on Saturday. Located in Carmel, the Class A Trailblazers came out of the nine-team Sectional 56 at Lapel and upended the defending state champion hosts for the title, 64-56. The school joined the Association as a full member in 2003. University will face Tri-Central (20-3) in the first game at Frankfort on Saturday.

 

Class 2A’s Prairie Heights (12-11) earned its first sectional championship on Saturday in Sectional 37 at Garrett. The Panthers earned a one-point victory over Eastside in the first round, survived an overtime battle with Churubusco in the semis, and took a four-point decision from Fremont for the title. Prairie Heights first joined the IHSAA as a member school in 1964 and will face Harding (14-9) in the regional opener at South Adams this weekend.

 

Also ending long sectional title droughts last Saturday were: Hammond Clark (last title in 1972), Fort Wayne Snider (1982), Providence (1984) and Owen Valley (1985).

 

Semi-State pairings and game locations will be announced early Sunday afternoon.

LAWRENCE NORTH-CARMEL GAME ON STATE-WIDE CABLE TELEVISION

The boys basketball regional semifinal between top-ranked Lawrence North (25-0) and Carmel (17-7) will be aired live by the Indiana Cable Network to a state-wide audience on Saturday, March 11 at 12:07 p.m. EST / 11:07 a.m. CST.

 

The game will originate from Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the host of Class 4A, Regional 3, and will be broadcast on 48 cable systems throughout the state and available to approximately 1.2 million subscribers. Chris Denari and John Laskowski will serve as the broadcast team.

 

As part of its agreement with the IHSAA, the Indiana Cable Network will also broadcast a semi-state game on March 18 as well as all four state championship games live from Conseco Fieldhouse on March 25. An announcement of which semi-state game will be televised will be announced as matchups become known.

WRESTLING

 

STATE WRESTLING FINALS TO BE AIRED

The championship rounds from last month’s Individual and Team Wrestling State Finals will be televised on several cable systems around the state over the next several days.

 

The 14 state championship matches from the Feb. 18 Individual State Finals will be aired Wednesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. EST. It will be re-played again Friday, March 10 also at 7 p.m. EST.

 

The Feb. 25 state championship dual match between Evansville Mater Dei and Bellmont will be shown on Wednesday, March 15 at 7 p.m. EST and replayed again Friday, March 17 at 7 p.m. EST.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

 

GYMNASTS HEAD TO REGIONAL ROUND THIS WEEK

Three of the four regional sites will host action on Friday night and another on Saturday afternoon as the 34th Annual Girls Gymnastics State Tournament enters its second week.

 

Columbus East, Huntington North and Valparaiso will each conduct competition on Friday, while Harrison (West Lafayette) is scheduled for the next day.

 

Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, the defending state champion and winner in two of the last three years, will be one of six full teams competing at Huntington North on Friday. The Saints hope to be one of the top two teams to automatically qualify for the state finals at Perry Meridian High School on Saturday, March 18.

 

Results from each regional site will be posted to the IHSAA website as they become available over the weekend.

 

Regionals

Date: Friday, Mar. 10 and Saturday, Mar. 11.

Admission: $5.00.

Advancement: The top six place winners in each event advance to the state finals; the top six place winners in the all-around competition advance to the state finals; all gymnasts who receive the score of the sixth place gymnast at the previous state finals meet advance to the state finals (Floor Exercise    9.575; Balance Beam    9.250; Vault    9.525; Bars    9.375); All-Around    37.075); The top two teams compiling the highest number of points at each regional shall advance as a complete team to the state finals; individual ties for advancement of the last position in the tournament series shall stand.

2.   Harrison (West Lafayette) (2): Harrison (West Lafayette), Warren Central. Sat, 12:30 pm

Time: Opening ceremonies at 12:30 p.m. EST; Competition at 1 p.m. EST.
