FIELD OF 64 HEADS TO REGIONAL ROUND ON SATURDAY

Three first-time sectional champions lead the charge into the regional round of the 96th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament. Two semifinal games followed by an evening championship game are scheduled for 16 sites this Saturday with survivors earning a berth in the semi-state round on Saturday, March 18.

Lanesville (20-3), whose tournament history dates all the way back to the 1925 New Albany sectional when it was known as Franklin Township, cut down the sectional championship nets for the first time in school history over the weekend. The Class A Eagles survived a two-point overtime affair with Christian Academy of Indiana in Friday’s semifinals and edged host Borden by a single point in the final game. Lanesville will take on Hauser (21-2) in Saturday’s Class A regional at Franklin.

Conversely, winning a sectional championship in its very first year of tournament eligibility was reality for University (16-7) on Saturday. Located in Carmel, the Class A Trailblazers came out of the nine-team Sectional 56 at Lapel and upended the defending state champion hosts for the title, 64-56. The school joined the Association as a full member in 2003. University will face Tri-Central (20-3) in the first game at Frankfort on Saturday.

Class 2A’s Prairie Heights (12-11) earned its first sectional championship on Saturday in Sectional 37 at Garrett. The Panthers earned a one-point victory over Eastside in the first round, survived an overtime battle with Churubusco in the semis, and took a four-point decision from Fremont for the title. Prairie Heights first joined the IHSAA as a member school in 1964 and will face Harding (14-9) in the regional opener at South Adams this weekend.

Also ending long sectional title droughts last Saturday were: Hammond Clark (last title in 1972), Fort Wayne Snider (1982), Providence (1984) and Owen Valley (1985).

Semi-State pairings and game locations will be announced early Sunday afternoon.
