SEVENTEEN ITEMS ON BOARD OF DIRECTORS AGENDA

The IHSAA Board of Directors will conduct its annual review of the Association’s by-laws during its meeting on Monday, May 1, in Indianapolis.

The 16-member board, with Manchester principal Nancy Alspaugh presiding as President, will consider 17 proposals to amend the Association by-laws at the meeting which is scheduled for 8 a.m. EDT / 7 a.m. CDT at the IHSAA Office.

As outlined in the IHSAA by-laws, any member school principal, any member of the Board of Directors or the Commissioner may make a proposal for an amendment as long as it is presented to the IHSAA Office prior to March 1. The board has four options on each proposal: affirm, deny, table or amend.

A copy of the agenda that is before the Board is available in PDF format from the IHSAA website. A copy of the current by-laws also is available in PDF.

Additional information will be communicated in the days leading up to the meeting.

NEW SOCCER TOURNAMENT ALIGNMENTS APPROVED

At its March 24 meeting, the IHSAA Executive Committee unanimously approved the realignment and assignment of schools in the boys and girls soccer tournament series. The changes go into effect next fall.

At its August 4, 2005 meeting, the Committee approved changes to the boys tournament including moving from 32 to 64 sectionals and adding a fourth week to its format.

The boys sectionals will be played in a Thursday-Saturday format during Week 14 (one week earlier than current format). Each sectional will have four or five teams instead of eight or nine as has been the case in many parts of the state in recent years.

The regional will change from a two-team to a four-team affair and be played in a new Wednesday-Saturday format. The regional had been played mid-week.

The semi-states and state finals will be played on the following Saturdays and each remain in the current four-team format.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

The following girls basketball players have been named to the 2006 Indianapolis Star Indiana Girls All-Star team: Ashley Barlow, Pike; Amber Harris, North Central (Indianapolis); Dee Dee Jernigan, East Chicago Central; Melissa Lechlitner, South Bend St. Joseph’s; Susan Lester, Pendleton Heights; FahKara Malone, Evansville Memorial; Audrey McDonald, Kokomo; Maria Olsthoorn, Castle; Courtney Reed, Northfield; Chanell Ridley, Fort Wayne Concordia; Amanda Stull, Rushville; Melanie Thornton, Carmel.  The head coach for the team is Julie Shelton, Mount Vernon (Fortville.)  The assistant coaches are Kathie Layden, Tri-Central and Todd Salkoski, Shenandoah.  The assistant to the coaches is Liz Honneger. The Indiana All-Stars will face the Kentucky All-Stars on June 17 at Bowling Green, Ky. and on June 24 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Ted Huber received the Hub Etchison Distinguished Service Award from the Indiana Football Coaches Association at their annual state clinic on March 18 at Lawrence North High School.  The award recognizes a retired football coach who has greatly contributed to the growth of the IFCA and high school football in the state. Huber retired this year from Ball State after a 39 year football career.  He is a past president of the IFCA and founded the Junior Watch program for IFCA to recognize upcoming Senior football players.

Dee Dee Jernigan of East Chicago Central tallied five points and seven rebounds as a member of the West team while Amber Harris of North Central (Indianapolis) finished with two points, one rebound and three blocks for the East in the McDonald’s All-American Game in San Diego on Wednesday. Harris was named Indiana’s Miss Basketball by the Indianapolis Star last week.

Sports Illustrated, USA Today and Prep Nation each named Lawrence North’s boys basketball team as its national champion in their final prep rankings earlier this week. The Wildcats are the first Indiana team to finish the season in the top spot in each respective poll.

Noblesville television station, WHMB-TV (Channel 40), will air a one-hour special, “The Wildcats are Champions” on Friday, March 31 at 9 pm EST commemorating the Lawrence North boys basketball team’s last three state championship seasons. The program, hosted by Rob Blackman and Dave Nicholson, will have interviews with Coach Jack Keefer, current players, including Greg Oden and Mike Conley, assistant coaches and administrators.

North Montgomery High School will host the “Clinic of Champions” on Saturday, April 15. The event is geared toward improving the performance of all coaches at all levels (youth through high school). Among the featured speakers is NFL Pro Bowler Anthony Munoz along with son Michael and daughter Michelle, who also enjoyed stellar playing careers. Other speakers include former Ben Davis football coach Dick Dullaghan, Evansville Mater Dei wrestling coach Mike Goebel and Purdue University volleyball coach Dave Shondell. For more information on the clinic, contact Dr. Bob Brower at rbrower@nm.k12.in.us or Charley German at cgerman@nm.k12.in.us.

Lawrence North’s Greg Oden was named the 2006 Naismith Trophy Male High School Player of the Year presented by POWERade, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced last week. Oden, along with teammate Mike Conley, also participated in the McDonald’s All-American Game in San Diego on Wednesday. Oden scored 10 points, had five rebounds and blocked four shots. Conley went scoreless and tallied one steal.

Zionsville Community High School has hired Mike Smith as its new head boys soccer coach.  Smith had previous varsity coaching stints at Covington, Mooresville and Bloomington South.  Zionsville also accepted the resignation of boys basketball coach Dave Ferrell.  Ferrell had just completed his fourth season as the head of the basketball program.
