A total of 13 players with Indiana connections, including five that prepped in our state, were taken in the 2006 NFL Draft on Saturday and Sunday.

Jay Cutler (Heritage Hills) and Mathias Kiwanuka (Indianapolis Cathedral) were both first round draft choices, while Bernard Pollard (Fort Wayne South Side) and Jeremy Trueblood (Indianapolis Cathedral) were second round picks. Jason Pociask (Plainfield) was taken in the fifth round.

Four of those five played for a state championship during their high school careers.

As a senior quarterback, Cutler caught the game-winning 12-yard pass off a lateral in overtime to help Heritage Hills to a 27-24 victory over Zionsville for the 2000 Class 3A state title. It was the school’s first in any sport.

Kiwanuka and Trueblood were both part of 4A state championship teams at Indianapolis Cathedral during their sophomore and junior seasons in 1998 and 1999. Kiwanuka picked off a Goshen pass in the final seconds of the 1999 championship game that preserved a 24-21 come-from-behind victory for the Irish. He also tallied five tackles and a pass reception.

Pociask played both ways as a Plainfield senior and helped the Quakers to a state runner-up finish in the 2000 Class 4A championship game. He caught one pass and made five tackles in the game against East Noble.
