PAIRINGS ANNOUNCED FOR 22ND STATE SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

A field of 366 teams and 6,447 participants will begin play in less than two weeks as the pairings for the 22nd Annual IHSAA Softball State Tournament Series were drawn this morning at the IHSAA Office in Indianapolis.

The tournament will begin with 64 sectionals conducted in four different classes on Monday, May 22, and continue through the course of the week concluding on Saturday, May 27. Daily schedules for each tournament site will be listed on the IHSAA website as they become available from the host schools. Because of possible weather postponements and other conflicts, it is advised to check with the host school for precise day and time schedules.

Each of the sectional champions will advance to regional play – four sites in each class – on Saturday, June 3. Each of the 16 regional tournaments will feature four teams with two semifinal games beginning in the morning, followed by the championship game later in the day and a berth in the state finals on the line.

The 16 regional champions – four in each class – will advance to the state finals Friday, June 9, and Saturday, June 10. On Friday night, there will be two semifinal games in each class at four different sites. The Class A semifinals will be played at Hamilton Southeastern, the Class 2A semifinals will be played at North Central (Indianapolis), the Class 3A semifinals will be contested at Pike, and the 4A semifinals are scheduled for Carmel's Cherry Tree Complex. On Saturday, June 10, the four championship games will each be played at Ben Davis High School for the second year.

Among the top-ranked teams in the most recent poll from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association, 4A No. 1 Chesterton begins its tournament run against host Portage in Sectional 2; Class 3A’s Pendleton Heights drew Mount Vernon (Fortville) in the Sectional 27 opener at Hamilton Heights; Class 2A’s Indianapolis Scecina will meet home-standing Indian Creek in the bye game in Sectional 43 and; host Whiting drew the bye and will take on the Hebron-Kouts winner in the semifinals of Class A’s Sectional 49.

Pairings for the defending state champions include: Martinsville (Class 4A) meets Terre Haute South in the opening game of Sectional 13 at Mooresville; Gibson Southern (Class 3A) takes on Vincennes Lincoln in one semifinal of Sectional 31 at Pike Central; host Eastern (Greentown) (Class 2A) drew Northwestern in the first game of Sectional 40 and; Clinton Prairie (Class A) will host Rossville in Game 1 of Sectional 53.

Two member schools will be making their first appearance in the softball state tournament including Liberty Christian (Sectional 54 at Wes-Del) and Trinity Lutheran (Sectional 59 at Northeast Dubois). Both are assigned to Class A.
