PAIRINGS ANNOUNCED FOR 40TH BASEBALL STATE TOURNAMENT

A field of 385 teams and 7,704 student-athletes will begin play at the end of the month as the pairings for the 40th Annual IHSAA Baseball State Tournament Series were drawn this morning at the IHSAA Office in Indianapolis.

The tournament will begin with 64 sectionals conducted in four different classes beginning Monday, May 29 (Memorial Day) and continue through the week concluding on Saturday, June 3. Daily schedules for each tournament site will be listed on the IHSAA website as they become available from the hosts. Because of possible weather postponements and other conflicts, it is advised to check with the host school for precise day and time schedules.

Each of the sectional champions will advance to a one-game regional contest to be played Tuesday, June 6 on the home field of the odd-numbered sectional champion (see pairings below).

The 32 regional champions – eight in each class – will advance to one of eight semi-state sites on Saturday, June 10. Semifinal games are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. with the two winners returning for an 8 p.m. championship game with a berth in the state finals on the line.

This year’s state finals, scheduled for Saturday, June 17, will return to Victory Field in Indianapolis after being played in Lafayette a year ago. Prior to last year, Victory Field had been the site of the state finals since 1997. The Class A state championship game is scheduled for 10 a.m. EDT with the 2A game at 1 p.m. EDT, the 3A game at 4 p.m. EDT and the 4A game at 8:07 p.m. EDT. The 4A game will be televised live on the Indiana Cable Network to systems throughout the state.

Three member schools will be making their first appearance in the baseball state tournament including Bethesda Christian (Sectional 56 at Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter), Liberty Christian (Sectional 54 at Wes-Del) and Trinity Lutheran (Sectional 59 at Northeast Dubois). Each is assigned to Class A.

Among the top-ranked teams in each class, 4A No. 1 Carmel will host Noblesville in the first round of Sectional 10; Jasper (3A), host of Sectional 31, drew Washington for its first game; Hagerstown (2A) will meet Centerville in the semifinals of Sectional 42 at Northeastern and; Lafayette Central Catholic (A) will meet host Carroll (Flora) in the opening game in Sectional 51.

The defending state champions will begin their 2006 tournament trails the following way: Brownsburg (4A) meets Pike in Sectional 8 semifinals at Ben Davis; Andrean (3A) will host the Gary Wallace-Gary Wirt winner in the Sectional 18 semifinals; North Posey (2A) takes on Tell City in the first round in Sectional 48 at South Spencer and; Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian (A) plays Hamilton in Sectional 53 at Bethany Christian.
