STATE TRACK & FIELD MEETS IN BLOOMINGTON THIS WEEKEND

Seven individuals that captured eight events in 2005 lead the way in this weekend’s IHSAA Girls and Boys Track & Field State Finals in Bloomington.

For the third consecutive year, the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University will play host to the 33rd girls meet and 103rd boys gathering.

In Friday’s girls competition, Fort Wayne Northrop will be seeking to add to its record string of six consecutive state championships. The Bruins’ streak is the third longest active run in IHSAA sports behind Carmel’s girls swimming team (20 straight) and Muncie Burris’ volleyball team (nine straight).

Northrop senior Tamara Adams is one of five girls participating this weekend with an individual state title to her credit. The 2004 champ in the 100 hurdles enters this year’s event as the top seed and is second in the 100 dash and third in the 300 hurdles. She finished fourth in last year’s 100 hurdles.

To reclaim her title, she’ll have to get by Muncie Central senior Vanneisha Ivy, who set the state meet record in the event last year in 13.95. Ivy, one of three defending state champs in the state meet and also the 300 hurdles winner as a sophomore, enters Friday as the No. 2 seed in both hurdles.

Also back to defend their championships from a year ago are Bloomington North sophomore Rachel Deloney in the discus and Ben Davis junior Silvia Massey in the 300 hurdles. Deloney owns the second best mark entering Friday’s discus competition and tops the field in the shot put. The discus hasn’t seen a repeat winner since 1983. Massey clocked the fifth best regional time in the 300 and is fourth in the 100 hurdles.

Also returning is 2004 pole vault state champ Katie Veith of Homestead. After winning the competition as a freshmen two years ago, Veith shared the state meet record with winner Brianna Neumann of Fort Wayne Northrop at 12-9, but settled for second place overall based on more attempts. Veith cleared 13-9 at last week’s Northrop regional, over one-and-a-half feet better than the next-best height state-wide.

For Saturday’s boys meet, though six underclassmen won individual titles in 2005, only four return in the event they won last year.

Among them is Evansville Harrison junior Bryce Brown who collected the state title in both hurdles events. After setting the record during last year’s meet in the 300 hurdles in 36.34, Brown clocked in with the fourth-best time last week and third-best in the 110 hurdles.

Arthur (Scott) Wims of Fort Wayne Northrop is the top seed in the 200 meters, the event he won a year ago, and will attempt to become the first person to repeat in the race since 1992. The senior will have another opportunity in the 100 meters entering with the third-best time.

Also returning is Ben Davis senior Jonathan Tate in the high jump and Greencastle junior Andy Weatherford in the 1600 meters. Tate won last year’s high jump crown with a leap of 6-9 and enters the weekend following a 6-6 performance last week.

Three other young men that have stood on the top step of the awards podium will be participating this weekend, just not in the event they won.

Seymour senior Eric Werskey, last year’s winner in the discus, is the top seed this time in the shot put and the only individual to surpass 60 feet in the regional; Northrop senior Travis White, the 2004 champ in the high jump, is entered in the 400 meters and the 4x400 relay entry and; Gary West Side junior Eugene Ellis, who took home the blue ribbon medal in last year’s 800 meters, is entered in the 400 meters as well as the school’s short and middle-distance relays.

GIRLS TENNIS

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY UP FOR GRABS IN GIRLS TENNIS

Four teams combining for an outstanding 71-2 record in duals this year make up the field in the 32nd Annual IHSAA Girls Tennis State Finals this Saturday at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

One semifinal pits two undefeated teams against one another in top-ranked Munster (17-0) and No. 9 Homestead (18-0). The other semi features No. 7 Terre Haute North (21-1) against defending state champion Park Tudor (15-1). Both matches begin at 10 a.m. EDT with the winners facing off for the state championship at 2 p.m. The semifinal losers will meet in the consolation match at the same time.

Munster is making its 10th trip to the state finals and second in the last three years. The Mustangs have been to the championship match twice since the current format came into existence in 1982 but settled for the runner-up trophy both times. This group of Mustangs swept through five tournament opponents before surviving a 3-2 encounter with Plymouth in last Saturday’s semi-state title match to advance to state. Maureen Modesto, a junior, and Mary Hill, a freshman, hold down Munster’s top two singles spots. Modesto was the state singles runner-up as a freshman in 2004 and brings in a 23-0 record this weekend. Hill boasts a 22-0 record. The No. 2 doubles team of Rohini Chatterjee and Samantha Tantillo are 17-0 this season.

Homestead hopes to change its luck even more. The Spartans have been to this level of the tournament 13 times and to the championship match six times but have been turned away each year most recently as 2004. The Spartans blew through the regular season winning all 11 duals by a 5-0 count, but pulled out a pair of 3-2 matches in the semi-state to earn another shot at the elusive state title. Senior Amy Recht and freshman Jade Johnson own the top two singles spots, respectively, with 22-2 records. Melissa Martin and Caitlin Meyers, both seniors, are 12-1 at the No. 2 doubles.

Terre Haute North is the only newcomer to this year’s state finals. The Patriots are credited with a state finals appearance in 1975 under the old format but this will be the first time the school has been represented as a full team on the courts. The team’s only loss this season was a 3-2 setback at Delta in mid-April but it’s won 16 straight duals since then. Freshman Brittany Farmer and senior Laura Burdick are 24-1 this season at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively while Katie Clagg and Molly Williams, both seniors, are 22-2 in the top doubles position.

Park Tudor will be making its sixth trip to the state finals and hopes to add its fourth girls crown to the school’s rich tennis tradition. Under the team format, the Panthers have never lost a state finals match (6-0). Coach Dave Heffern has guided Park Tudor to each championship (1998, 2000 and 2005) and also owns four boys titles. On the court, Park Tudor is led by Mary Beth Winingham at 22-2. The senior finished a perfect 22-0 last year at No. 2 singles and has earned the No. 1 position this year beating out last year’s state singles champion Megan Martzolf. Martzolf, a junior, is 23-1 at No. 2. The Panthers have their No. 2 doubles team to thank for this opportunity as sophomores Elizabeth Emhardt and Heather Rogers pulled out a third set tiebreaker to help edge Center Grove in last week’s semi-state, 3-2. That win avenged Park Tudor’s only setback of the year, a 3-2 road loss on May 8.

Rosters and results for each team are available here.

Also in play on Saturday at North Central are the regional rounds of the Individual Singles and Doubles State Tournaments. Singles players and doubles teams that win twice on Saturday will advance to the Individual State Finals on June 9-10 also scheduled for North Central. Pairings are listed below in bracket order.
