BOYS GOLF STATE FINALS BEGIN TUESDAY

A total of 137 golfers will converge on The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin as the 70th Annual IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals begin Tuesday, June 13. Second round play concludes the next day.

Twenty-one teams advanced five golfers each and 32 golfers have advanced without their teams to the event which is being played for the sixth year at course. Participants will tee off the Middle 9 course and the Road 9 course beginning at 8 a.m. EDT / 7 a.m. CDT on Tuesday. Those teams and individuals that make the cut will return for a second day on Wednesday with the first group again starting at 8 a.m. EDT. The first round tee times and pairings are available here.

Nine of last year’s Top 25 individuals will be back including Madison’s Christian Poling, the defending state champion who will be in the first group to tee off from the Middle 9 course on Tuesday. The senior carded a 69-72-141 last year, which tied for the fourth-best showing in state finals history. Only three individuals have ever won back-to-back state titles (Joe Campbell, Anderson, 1952, 1953; Ron Frantz, Indianapolis Broad Ripple, 1960, 1961; Jeremy Wilkinson, South Bend Clay, 1994, 1995).

Eight of last year’s 21 teams made it back including runner-up Noblesville and fourth-place Floyd Central. Noblesville only returns two of its five players from 2005 while Floyd Central returns with four. Three others which made the first round cut last year are Harrison of West Lafayette and Valparaiso, both of which tied for sixth place, and Michigan City. Harrison returns four of its five while Valpo made it back with just two players. Michigan City, which finished ninth, also returns four.

Defending team champion Warsaw will not be back to defend its title as only two of its individuals qualified, including Grant Slater who tied for third overall last year at seven shots behind Poling.

Fans and media are invited to view the progress of the state finals by visiting www.golfstat.com. The IHSAA will post the hole-by-hole scores for every player throughout the two days.
