FIRST WEEK OF FALL SPORTS STATISTICS COMPILED

Following the first week of competition, the IHSAA, using the on-line service of Stats & Go, has published the state’s statistical leaders in several categories in the sports of football, soccer and volleyball. The listings can be found later in this news release.

If a school hasn’t already registered, the IHSAA encourages every member school to participate in this statistical compilation by designating a single individual to register at www.statsandgo.com and to maintain the school’s team and individual statistics throughout the season. The service is free of charge and is an efficient way of promoting your student-athletes’ achievements during the course of the season.

All updates should conclude each Monday as the leaders in various categories will be published in the IHSAA news release and distributed to media statewide each Tuesday.

IHSAA FALL BULLETIN POSTED TO WEBSITE

The Fall edition of the IHSAA Bulletin, containing tournament policies, procedures, rules and alignments for all fall sports, has been posted to the Association’s website as a PDF file: Fall Bulletin

Printed copies of the publication will be mailed to school administrators in the coming days.

CROSS COUNTRY SEMI-STATE MOVES FROM BLOOMINGTON TO BEDFORD

Due to a conflict with Indiana University, the boys and girls cross country semi-state scheduled for Saturday, October 22 and previously hosted by Bloomington North has been moved to Bedford North Lawrence for this year’s tournament series.

The event is the same day as the Ohio State-Indiana football game in Bloomington. Teams and individuals advancing from the October 15 regionals at Bedford North Lawrence, Brown County, Eastern (Pekin) and Pike Central will feed into the Bedford North Lawrence semi-state.

WITH TWO NEW SCHOOLS APPROVED, IHSAA MEMBERSHIP REACHES 400

During its first meeting of the new school year on August 4, the IHSAA Executive Committee approved applications for two new member schools – Campagna Academy Charter School in Schererville (Lake County) and Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School of Indianapolis. Both schools will be able to compete in regular season events immediately but, by IHSAA rule, won’t be eligible to participate in state tournament competition for two years (2007-08).

With the two new schools, IHSAA membership now totals 400 schools, the highest number since 1983-84 when 401 schools belonged to the Association. In the last five years, 14 schools have joined as full members. Peak membership of 820 schools was reached in 1942, the year that private, parochial and institutional schools were first admitted to the Association.

COMMITTEE APPROVES CHANGES TO BOYS SOCCER TOURNAMENT

Also at its August 4 meeting, the IHSAA Executive Committee unanimously approved changing the format of the boys soccer tournament series beginning in 2006-07 including adding a fourth week to the tournament.

The number of sectionals will move from the current 32 to 64 and be played in a Thursday-Saturday format during Week 14 (one week earlier than current format). Each sectional will have four or five teams instead of eight or nine as is the case in many parts of the state.

The regional will change from a two-team to a four-team affair and be played in a new Thursday-Saturday format. Currently, the regional is played mid-week in between sectionals and semi-states.

The semi-states and state finals will be played on the following Saturdays and each remain in the current four-team format.

MUNCIE BURRIS’ SHONDELL WINS 1,000TH CAREER VOLLEYBALL MATCH

Muncie Burris volleyball coach Steve Shondell won his 1,000th career match last Thursday night in the Owls’ season opener against Monroe Central, 25-8, 25-8, 25-7 at Ball Gym. Shondell, in his 30th season as coach, has guided Burris to 16 state championships, including the last eight consecutive in Class 2A.

In the match, Burris was led by Lauren Kaminsky’s 14 kills, while Christie Waters and Caitlyn Vann each had seven in the Mid-Eastern Conference season-opener for both schools. It was also Burris’ 49th consecutive victory dating back to the 2003 season.

At the conclusion of the match, Shondell’s career varsity record stands at 1,000-79. He ranks first in Indiana and eighth nationally among high school volleyball coaches in career victories, and his winning percentage (92.6 percent) is the best in the nation among that same group.
