EIGHTEEN SERVING ON IHSAA STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE

A total of 18 student-athletes from across the state of Indiana have been selected and are serving on the IHSAA’s Student Advisory Committee for the 2005-06 school year.

The committee, in its fourth year of operation, represents the entire IHSAA membership and its committee structure mirrors that of the IHSAA Board of Directors with regard to class, district and diversity. Members of the committee are chosen from those in attendance at the IHSAA Student Leadership Conference each summer.

The Student Advisory Committee formulated a mission statement that outlines its role as an advisory group to the IHSAA:

“The Student Advisory Committee is a diverse, dynamic group of student-athletes focused on providing a means of education and communication for its constituency. The group serves as a conduit between student-athletes, administrators, and the Executive Committee of the IHSAA. The Student Advisory Committee promotes all standing ideals of the IHSAA, including leadership, sportsmanship and integrity.”

During the first meeting of this year’s Student Advisory Committee, elections were held to establish officers:

President

Barry Helfrich, Gibson Southern

Vice President

Brittany Herschberger, Fairfield

Vice President

Kathy Hill, North Central (Indianapolis)

Vice President

Ashley Piper, Carmel

Secretary

Seth Fair, Brownsburg

One of the Committee’s functions includes hosting student meetings, held in conjunction with the Fall Area Principals

meetings around the state. All member school principals are asked to allow one of their student leaders to accompany

them to their fall meeting. Student Advisory Committee members then lead the student-athlete meetings and gather

insight on their perspective on high school athletics.

In addition, the Student Advisory Committee assists the Executive Committee in awards ceremonies during the IHSAA

state championship events throughout the school year.

“The IHSAA recognizes the importance of providing an avenue for student input,” said IHSAA assistant commissioner Sandy Searcy, who acts as staff liaison for the committee. “It’s good to offer a forum for the continued exchange of ideas for those who are most directly affected – the student-athletes.”

IHSAA NAMES VISUAL SPORTS NETWORK AS ITS OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER

The Indiana High School Athletic Association has selected Visual Sports Network of Indianapolis as its official championship photographer for the 2005-06 academic year.

Visual Sports Network will provide quality individual and team photography at all IHSAA championship events in 2005-06.  Fans will be able to purchase photos online at the Visual Sports Network website http://www.vsnindy.com, which will be accessible through the IHSAA website.

“We’re glad to have an Indiana company with 25 years of experience as our official photographer,” said IHSAA Communications Director Joe Gentry.  “We’re confident that Visual Sports Network will provide fans with many great images from our championship events.”

“We are excited to be the official photographer of the IHSAA,” said Visual Sports president Mark Roach.  “Twenty-five years of photographing high school sports in Indiana has prepared us for this opportunity to serve.”

Visual Sports has provided quality team and individual portraits to Indiana colleges, high schools, middle schools, and leagues since 1980.  “We have used Visual Sports for over a decade and we’ve been pleased throughout,” said Butler University Associate Athletic Director Jim McGrath.  “They have done terrific work and we’re looking forward to a long and continued relationship.

VSN has shot the Indianapolis Colts team picture for the past 18 years.  “Our association with Visual Sports began in 1987 and it has been mutually beneficial,” said Colts Vice President of Public Relations Craig Kelley.  “We’re appreciative of their professionalism and efforts and we enjoy dealing with them.”

Visual Sports Network will debut in its new role at the IHSAA Girls Golf Tournament on September 30-October 1 at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.

HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS PARTICIPATION TOPS SEVEN MILLION MARK

The number of participants in high school athletics increased for the 16th consecutive year in 2004-05 and topped seven million for the first time in history.

Based on figures from the 50 state high school athletic/activity associations, plus the District of Columbia, that are members of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), participation for the 2004-05 school year rose by 115,157 students, to 7,018,709, according to the 2004-05 High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS. The survey also determined that nearly 53 percent of students enrolled in high schools participate in athletics.
