GIRLS GOLF MOVES TO REGIONAL ROUND SATURDAY

The regional round of the 33rd Annual Girls Golf State Tournament Series takes place Saturday, Sept. 24 at seven courses around the state. The top three teams at each site, along with the top three individuals, including ties, not with an advancing team will earn a spot in the state finals next week.

Top-ranked and defending state champion Penn had an impressive showing in the sectional played at Juday Creek in Granger last Saturday and will meet up with other regional qualifiers at Beechwood Golf Course in LaPorte. The Kingsmen put up a 293 to top all teams state-wide as all four scoring players carded sub-80 rounds. Senior Julia Potter’s 69 earned medallist honors and also the state’s low mark as well. Teammates Laura and Anne Ormson added a 72 and 73, respectively, and Erin Buttrey turned in a 79.

No. 2 Noblesville’s 303 at Bent Tree in Westfield and No. 3 Martinsville’s 309 at Cascades in Bloomington were the second and third-best team scores of the weekend. The Millers will head to Westwood Country Club in New Castle for the regional while the Artesians will host action at Foxcliff Golf Club.

After Potter, five other individuals recorded sub-72 scores: Abby Cotter of Noblesville (70) at Bent Tree; defending state champion Angela Gauck of North Decatur (70) at Greensburg Country Club; Lina Pasquali of East Noble (70) who defeated Raquel Hopton of Fort Wayne Snider (70) in a playoff at Cobblestone in Kendallville and; Brebeuf Jesuit’s Aimee Neff (71) at Bent Tree.

Western, which placed third in its sectional at Chippendale in Kokomo, will be looking for its fifth consecutive regional championship at Meshingomesia Country Club in Marion this weekend.

Barring any weather delays, results from each site will be posted to the IHSAA website as they become available from the hosts. Also, pairings and tee-times for the state finals are scheduled to be available Monday morning as long as play is completed at all seven venues.

Looking ahead to next week, media members who will be covering individuals or teams at the state finals should apply for credentials as soon as possible. Please fax in your request (with name(s) of individuals applying) on company letterhead to IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at 317-575-4244. Approved requests will be left for pickup at the team check-in table on Friday, Sept. 30.

FOOTBALL STATE TOURNAMENT DRAW SET FOR SUNDAY, OCT. 2

Pairings for the 33rd Annual State Football Tournament Series will be drawn on Sunday, Oct. 2 at the IHSAA Office in Indianapolis. The draw will be broadcast live beginning at 6 p.m. Indianapolis time on the IHSAA Championship Radio Network and produced by WIBC Radio (1070 AM) in Indianapolis. Bob Lovell of Indiana Sports Talk and Vince Welch of WIBC will serve as hosts.

Upon conclusion of the 90-minute broadcast, the complete pairings will be placed on the IHSAA website at www.ihsaa.org.

One slight change to this year’s draw is that, unlike in previous years, the second team drawn in each first-round game will serve as the host. Teams drawing a bye into the second round will continue to be the road team, however.

Members of the media and the general public are welcome to attend the pairings show, however there is limited space available in the building.

A list of radio affiliates scheduled to carry the broadcast will be included in next week’s release. Any interested radio station wishing to carry the show should contact Mark Higdon of Associated Sports Productions at 317-633-1462.

SHERIDAN’S BUD WRIGHT LOOKING FOR 300th CAREER COACHING VICTORY FRIDAY

Longtime Sheridan football coach Larry “Bud” Wright will be looking for his 300th career coaching victory when his Class A No. 7 Blackhawks (4-1) visit Delphi (1-4) this Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.

His 300th victory while on the Sheridan sideline could come the following week at Tipton.

Wright, in his 40th year at the school, owns a 299-143-2 record in 41 years overall to rank fifth on Indiana’s all-time coaching victories list. He produced a 1-4 record in 1965, his first year as a head coach, at Mt. Ayr High School in Newton County before moving to Sheridan.

Since then, he has brought six state championships to the Class A school in northwest Hamilton County, including back-to-back titles in 1987 and 1988. He has coached four unbeaten squads during his tenure – 10-0 in 1975; 13-0 in 1980; 14-0 in 1984 and; 14-0 in 1988.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE STATE

  • Churubusco’s Drew Bianski set a school record for rushing yards in a game with 247 in a 42-6 victory over Eastside on Sept. 9.

  • Rodrigo Dosal has recently broken NorthWood’s boys soccer career scoring record.  Dosal scored two goals in a 4-3 win over Wawasee, giving him 38 on his career.  The previous school record of 36 was held by Brady Morningstar.

  • Former Evansville Memorial and Ball State basketball star Kate Endress was recently named Indiana’s NCAA Woman of the Year.  Endress, a 2005 Kodak/WBCA All-American, is one of 51 winners who will later be cut down to 10 finalists for the national award.

  • Evansville Memorial, currently fifth in the state coaches soccer poll, outscored its opponents 23-0 over two matches last week.

  • North Posey football coach Joe Gengelbach notched his 200th career victory in an 18-8 triumph over Southridge on Sept. 9. The Vikings are currently 4-1 on the season.

  • Penn junior quarterback Nick Keim completed his first 10 passes on his way to 15-for-16 passing in a 27-0 Penn victory over South Bend St. Joseph’s last Friday.  His completion percentage of .937 in the game is a state-best so far this year. Penn has now won 127 consecutive Northern Indiana Conference games.

·         Knox ended an 18-game losing streak dating back to the 2003 season with a 48-13 win over LaVille in a Northern State Conference football game on Sept. 16.

·         During Lapel’s 48-27 victory at Shenandoah last Friday, a trio of Bulldogs topped 100 yards rushing for the game. Sophomore RB Trent Crandall carried 9 times for 139 yards, including a 67 yard scamper for a score, junior RB E.J. Cripe carried 16 times for 120 yards and a touchdown and senior QB Kyle Holsinger picked up 101 yards on 13 runs. Additionally, senior RB Ryan Jones scored five touchdowns in the game (11 carries, 74 yards) along with a pair of two-point conversions. The Bulldogs are off to a 5-0 start this season, the best in school history.

  • In its last season in Conference Indiana, Martinsville’s girls golf team captured its ninth consecutive conference tournaments title dating back to the league’s formation. The Artesians will be joining the Mid-State Conference in 2006-07.

  • River Forest QB Mike Perkins connected with Nathan Parker on a state record-tying 99-yard touchdown play in the fourth quarter on Friday. The score was part of a rally that saw the Ingots put up 24 points over the final 12 minutes only to fall short against LaLumiere of LaPorte, 48-38.

  • Eastbrook’s Jason Poe tied a school record with five touchdowns in a 46-20 victory over Mississinewa on Sept. 9. The senior RB produced 215 yards of total offense, including 169 yards on the ground. His five scores equaled the mark also held by former Panthers Jared Warner (1993) and Ron Boucher (1995).

  • Hagerstown’s Sam Weiss and Teanna Fleming set school records in volleyball in a recent victory over Cambridge City Lincoln.  Weiss’ 21 kills set a new single-match school record, and Fleming broke her own school record of 33 assists by posting 36.

·         Wes-Del ended the state’s longest losing streak of 42 games with a 41-0 victory at Indiana Deaf on Sept. 16. The Warriors’ last victory was a 32-6 win over Cambridge City Lincoln on Aug. 21, 2001.

  • Fairfield’s Derrick Yoder broke the school record for receptions in a game with 11 in a 31-6 victory over Eastside last Friday.  Yoder’s 11 catches went for 140 yards and a touchdown as Fairfield improved to 3-2 this season.
