GIRLS GOLF STATE FINALS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY

A total of 127 golfers will converge on The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin as the 33rd Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals get underway on Friday, Sept. 30. Second round play concludes the next day (Saturday, Oct. 1).

Twenty-one teams advanced five golfers each and 22 golfers advanced without their teams to the event now in its sixth year at the current site. Participants will tee off the Middle 9 course (2,800 yards) and the Road 9 course (2,897 yards) beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday. Those teams and individuals that make the cut will return for a second day on Saturday with the first group again starting at 8 a.m. | Round One Tee Times & Pairings

Ten teams from the 2004 field are back led by defending state champion and top-ranked Penn which returns four of its top five players from last year. The Kingsmen will be looking for their third state championship in four years and appear primed to do so as they posted the state’s low score each of the last two weekends – 293 in the sectional at Juday Creek in Granger and 313 in the regional at Beechwood in LaPorte.

Martinsville and Noblesville, which finished third and fourth, respectively at last year’s finals should be in the hunt as well. The Artesians won their own regional at Foxcliff last Saturday with a 327, while the Millers garnered top honors at Westwood in New Castle with a 317. DeKalb and Richmond also could challenge based on their consistent team scores this tournament.

Fifteen of last year’s top 25 finishers are back this year including the last two medallists. Defending champion Angela Gauck, a senior from North Decatur, posted a 75 at Saturday’s regional following a 70 at the sectional. Warsaw junior Emily Johnson, who won state as a freshman in 2003, fired a 74 on Saturday to tie for fifth overall at Noble Hawk in Kendallville. She’ll be a part of a Tigers team making its third straight appearance in the state meet. Also expected to be in the mix will be 2004 runner-up Julia Potter of Penn who fell to Gauck in a three-hole playoff in last year’s meet. Potter owns the tournament’s low score so far after a 69 at Juday Creek at the sectional. Evansville Memorial junior Ellen Mueller, who finished third in 2004 carded a 73 each of the last two weekends.

Fans are invited to view the progress of the state finals by visiting http://www.golfstat.com. The IHSAA will post the hole-by-hole scores for every player throughout the two days and, for those in attendance at the meet, a scrolling leaderboard will be projected in the pavilion adjacent to the clubhouse.

FOOTBALL

IHSAA RADIO NETWORK TO CARRY FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT DRAW THIS SUNDAY

As was announced in last week’s release, the pairings for the 33rd Annual State Football Tournament Series will be drawn on Sunday, Oct. 2 at the IHSAA Office in Indianapolis. The draw will be broadcast live beginning at 6 p.m. EST/CDT on the IHSAA Championship Radio Network and produced by WIBC Radio (1070 AM) in Indianapolis. Bob Lovell of Indiana Sports Talk and Vince Welch of WIBC will serve as hosts.

Upon conclusion of the 90-minute broadcast, the complete pairings will be placed on the IHSAA website at www.ihsaa.org.

One slight change to this year’s draw is that, unlike in previous years, the second team drawn in each first-round game will serve as the host. Teams drawing a bye into the second round will continue to be the road team, however.

Members of the media and the general public are welcome to attend the pairings show, however there is limited space available in the building.

A list of 47 radio affiliates are scheduled to carry the broadcast and are listed below. Any interested radio station wishing to carry the show should immediately contact Mark Higdon of Associated Sports Productions at 317-633-1462.
