BOYS & GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

CROSS COUNTRY SECTIONALS ONE WEEK AWAY

Sectional races in the 60th Annual Boys and 25th Annual Girls Cross Country Tournaments are scheduled for 32 sites on Tuesday, October 11. A total of 369 schools with 3,291 participants have entered the boys tournament while 358 schools with 2,870 runners have indicated they will enter the girls tournament. Regional competition is Saturday, Oct. 14, with semi-states one week later and the state finals at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Defending boys team champion Northridge will participate at the Elkhart Central site that afternoon with three of its top five runners – junior Loren Spirito, sophomore Ladd Mercer and senior Andy Williams -- returning from last year’s group. Hamilton Southeastern boasts 2004 individual winner Justin Roeder whose quest for a repeat title begins at the Pendleton Heights course.

Other runners from last year’s top 10 state finishers include junior De’Sean Turner of Warren Central (3rd overall), junior Robert Moldovan of Fort Wayne Northrop (5th) along with junior Michael Disher (9th) and senior Michael Pabody (10th), both of Southport.

Three-time defending team champion Valparaiso will look to add to that string once again this year as the Vikings get started at Chesterton next Tuesday. Four of Valpo’s five scoring runners from last year’s state finals are back in the lineup including junior twins Amanda and Lauren Hardesty, junior Ashlee Karp and senior Andrea Kent. With that group, the Vikings appear set to make another strong run at their sixth state championship in seven years.

Overall individual champion Adele Mitchell from Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran has graduated thus opening the door it would seem for a seven of last year’s top 10 finishers. In addition to Lauren Hardesty who placed fifth overall in 2004, others who hope to find their way back to Terre Haute at the end of the month include sophomore Alexandra Banfich of the Culver Academies (3rd), senior Sarah Kehe of Chesterton (4th), senior Megan Jackson of Northridge (6th), sophomore Maggie Bingham of Westfield (8th), sophomore Chelsea Blanchard of Carroll (Fort Wayne) and junior Kristina Krasich of Westfield (10th).

Both of Carmel’s boys and girls squads will put their streaks of consecutive sectional titles back on the line. The Greyhound boys team has ruled its sectional for a state-best 31 straight years, while the girls squad has won 24 straight, also tops in the state. Both teams will serve as host school for their respective races.
