BOYS TENNIS STATE FINALS, INDIVIDUAL REGIONALS THIS SATURDAY

A first-time state champion is assured as four teams will vie for top honors in the 39th Annual IHSAA Boys Team Tennis State Finals this Saturday at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

Three of the participants – Floyd Central, Penn and West Lafayette – have advanced to the state finals, including the championship match, in previous years, while Indianapolis Cathedral is on the scene for the first time in school history.

West Lafayette and Penn finished as state runner-up to Carmel in 2003 and 2004, respectively, and that pair will meet in one semifinal match at 10 am while Floyd Central will battle Cathedral in the other. The two winning teams will meet for the championship at 2 pm while the two losing teams will play for third place.

West Lafayette (19-4) is in the finals for the third time in five seasons after avenging an earlier loss to Delta, 4-1, and sweeping Kokomo, 5-0, last Saturday in the Homestead Semi-State. Two seniors on the team roster participated for the 2003 squad including No. 1 singles player Ben Seagren and No. 1 doubles player Phil Luke.

Penn (20-1) is the lone returning team from last year’s group of finalists and hopes to do one better than last year’s runner-up finish. The Kingsmen have five of last year’s seven players returning for another shot including the top two singles players in seniors Chris Jordan and Garrett Brinker. Senior Dean Guyer will pull duty at No. 3 singles this weekend while sophomore Troy Brinker and junior Gautham Vaidyanathan will team at No. 2 doubles.

Floyd Central (16-4) is back in the finals for the second time in three years and for the fifth time in school history. The Highlanders have three players on the roster that participated at state two years ago including junior Joseph Boesing at No. 1 singles, senior Andrew Voll at No. 3 singles and junior Craig Kirchgessner at No. 1 doubles.

Indianapolis Cathedral (20-1) won its first regional last week ousting two-time defending state champion Carmel, 5-0, and survived a pair of 3-2 encounters at the semi-state to earn its berth in the state meet. It may be their first trip, but the Irish are familiar with Floyd Central having taken a 4-1 decision in Indianapolis on August 19.

For additional information including probable lineups, records and season results for each of the state finalists, visit the PDF file, Meet the Teams on the IHSAA website.

Also in play on Saturday at North Central High School are the regional rounds of the Individual Singles and Doubles State Tournaments. Singles players and doubles teams that win twice on Saturday will advance to the Individual State Finals on Oct. 21-22 at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis. Pairings are listed below in bracket order.
