SINGLES, DOUBLES STATE CHAMPS TO BE CROWNED SATURDAY

Two singles players, including the defending state champion, return to the IHSAA Boys Tennis State Finals for Singles and Doubles players this weekend at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis.

In all six singles players and nine doubles teams make up this year’s field with early round matches on Friday and semifinals and championship/consolation matches on Saturday.

Heritage Christian senior Steven Myers is back to defend the singles title he earned last year and will attempt to become the first repeat winner in the tournament since Carmel’s Rick Witsken turned the trick in 1988. Myers is paired against Fort Wayne Canterbury junior Hunter Schouweiler, the other returnee from 2004. Schouweiler fell in the semifinal round last year and settled for a fourth place finish. Their match will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

Senior Christian Nikou of Center Grove and sophomore Derek Carpenter of Fort Wayne South Side each earned a bye into the semifinals on Saturday morning thanks to their respective teams advancing to the semi-state of the team competition on Oct. 8. Nikou will face the winner of Thiago Franco of Hauser and David Kovas of South Bend Adams, while Carpenter awaits the Myers-Schouweiler winner.

The doubles bracket will see all new faces this season. After winning both of their matches at last weekend’s team state finals competition, sophomore Joby Bacher and senior Phil Luke of West Lafayette will take on a team from either Plymouth or Providence on Friday at 2 p.m. The match between the latter is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m.

Center Grove and Heritage Christian are the only two schools to have representatives in both tournaments.

Results from this week’s regionals and Saturday’s semi-state will be posted to the IHSAA website as they are received, while information on each of the state finalist teams, including statistics and season results, is expected to be available next Tuesday.

State Finals Media Credentials – The 2005-06 IHSAA State Finals Media Credential issued previously for the girls golf and boys tennis state finals is good for admission.
