GREENWOOD’S CHERYL JOHNSON TO BE HONORED WITH OFFICIATING AWARD

In an annual presentation during Saturday’s state finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse, Cheryl Johnson will be honored as the 2005 recipient of the Interscholastic Officials Association Award for Volleyball.

A Greenwood resident, Johnson has been licensed by the IHSAA in volleyball the last 32 years. During her career, she has earned three assignments to the volleyball state finals, while also working 29 consecutive sectionals and 22 regionals.

Each year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in each of 11 sports during the school year.

Johnson was nominated for this award by her peers in the Fall Creek Officials Association (FCOA), one of 26 associations located throughout the state. She was selected for the honor by a committee of representatives from those associations.

Statewide, there are more than 8,000 licensed IHSAA officials in 11 sports.

A 32-year member of the FCOA, she has served on its Board of Directors and as its treasurer for the past eight years. She also has conducted the IHSAA Examination Program for the last 12 years.

Cheryl has served 35 of the past 38 years in education for the Indianapolis Public Schools, earning the IPS Recognition Award for "Going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty" and the American Heart Association’s Youth Achievement Award.

She graduated from Dyer High School, Indiana State University (bachelor’s), and Indiana University (master’s).
