TRIP TO THE DOME ON THE LINE THIS WEEKEND

Ten teams will begin to make travel plans for the state finals as the 33rd Annual IHSAA Football State Tournament Series reaches the semi-state stop this weekend.

Ten games are scheduled around the state – seven on Friday and three on Saturday – with the victor in each game earning a trip to the RCA Dome in Indianapolis over Thanksgiving weekend to play for a state title.

Of the 20 teams still alive, there are 11 former state champions including two of last year’s winners – three-time champion Roncalli in Class 4A and two-time defender Warren Central in 5A. Tri-West Hendricks, the 2003 and 2004 champ in 2A, fell to Speedway, 30-28 last Friday ending the Bruins’ run of 15 consecutive tournament triumphs.

Roncalli will attempt to set a new state record for most consecutive post-season victories on Saturday when the Rebels travel to Jasper. Roncalli tied the mark last weekend with its 17-7 victory over Greenwood for its 22nd consecutive win. They’ll also be looking for what would be a state-best 11th semi-state championship.

Warren Central meanwhile will be looking for its 17th straight tournament win when the Warriors host Avon on Friday night. Avon coach Dave Shelbourne, in his fourth year in charge of the Orioles, guided the Warren Central program from 1989-99. Current Warrior boss Kevin Wright is the son of Sheridan coach Larry “Bud” Wright. Sheridan travels to Adams Central in Class A action on Friday.

There are no rematches from regular season action among the 10 games, though a couple of games are between schools that are well-acquainted at this level of the tournament.

In Class 3A, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard and Heritage Hills will meet for the fifth consecutive year in a semi-state game. Bishop Chatard, which will host, holds a 3-1 advantage during that time while Heritage Hills won last year’s contest, 13-10. With the exception of the 2002 game, each has been played in Indianapolis.

Roncalli and Jasper will be meeting for the fifth time in the semi-state with the Rebels winning three of the previous four games. Prior to this Saturday’s game, the only other meeting in Jasper came in 1994, a 10-9 Roncalli victory. The Rebels went on to win the 3A crown that season.

Class 4A Fort Wayne South Side is the only team in the field making its semi-state debut. The Archers took a 24-17 decision from Delta in the regional championship game last weekend and will play at Lowell on Friday.

Four unbeaten teams are still in the hunt to complete a perfect season though at least one will fall after this weekend. On Friday, Griffith (13-0) plays at NorthWood (7-6) while Cass (13-0) hosts Jimtown (12-1). Perry Central will play at Knightstown on Saturday as both will put their 13-0 marks on the line. Knightstown coach Don Willard, in his 39th year with the Panthers, has announced his intention to retire at the end of the season.

Also, because semi-states were not part of the state tournament format until 1981, Merrillville will be looking for its first semi-state championship this weekend even though the Pirates won the 1976 3A state title. The Pirates will host Hamilton Southeastern in Class 5A on Friday. To illustrate the growth of Hamilton Southeastern over the years, the Royals defeated Woodlan, 7-6, for the 1981 state championship – in Class A.
