VALPARAISO’S BOB CARNAGEY TO BE HONORED AS TOP OFFICIAL

In a special ceremony prior to Saturday’s 4A championship game, Bob Carnagey of Valparaiso will be honored as the 2005 recipient of the Interscholastic Officials Association Award for football.

The IHSAA, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in 11 sports during the school year.

In the 33 years of the state football tournament, Carnagey has been involved in 24 of them, including four assignments to the state finals. Carnagey worked the 2004 Class 2A final with his son, Jay, serving as back judge on the crew.  He has worked eight semi-states, 16 regionals, and 24 sectionals.

Carnagey was selected for this award by a committee of representatives from the 26 officials associations throughout the state of Indiana. He was nominated by his peers representing the Lake County Association (LCAOA) of which he’s been a member for 32 years.

While a member of his officials organization, he has served in the positions of president, vice-president, sergeant at arms, board member, clinician, and scholarship committee member.  He has chaired the LCAOA Scholarship Committee for the past eight years.  That group has distributed over $30,000 to deserving students through its Paul Danko and LCAOA Memorial scholarships.

In addition to football, Carnagey also maintains IHSAA licenses in basketball and baseball and he has also officiated in softball.

Carnagey was inspired to pursue officiating after taking a class taught by officials Ernie Sohl and Bob “Dutch” Kramer at Purdue-Calumet.

Professionally, Carnagey is vice president of sales operations for Personets, Inc.

He is a 1964 graduate of Thornton Fractional North (Ill.) H.S. and he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1972 from Purdue-Calumet.

Carnagey has two sons, Jay and Craig, who are married to Nikee and Becky, and two granddaughters, Madison and Kenedi.

Carnagey served in the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service.
