INDIANAPOLIS COLTS TO HONOR ACADEMIC ALL-STAR FOOTBALL PLAYERS

The Indianapolis Colts will be honoring 24 high school student-athletes this Sunday, December 18 at 8:30 a.m. in Room 143-4 of the Indiana Convention Center (adjacent to the ATA North Lounge).

In conjunction with the Indiana High School Athletic Association and the Indiana Football Coaches Association, the Colts will cite 24 outstanding student-athletes with an award called the 2005 Indiana High School Academic All-Stars.

The Colts, the IHSAA and the IFCA have worked together for the past seven years to present these annual awards to the top student-athletes at each position.  This year, the IFCA polled high school head coaches around the state, and the coaches tabbed approximately 95 players who ranked in the top ten percent of their respective classes.  The IFCA selection committee narrowed the list to 24 winners, and those chosen truly represent the spirit of the award.  Seventeen of the 24 honorees are either class valedictorian (14) or salutatorian (3). Nine of the 10 high school regions throughout the State of Indiana have an award-winner, and each of the state’s five classes is represented on the all-star team.

The 24 2005 Indiana High School Academic All-Stars will be honored on Sunday at the morning program, and they will be presented at halftime of the Colts-San Diego Chargers game (kickoff is 1:00 p.m. ET).

“On behalf of Jim Irsay and the Irsay family, and with deep appreciation for the IHSAA and IFCA, the Colts are pleased to honor 24 outstanding football players who represent their families and schools in an outstanding manner,” said Colts President Bill Polian.  “The dedication it takes to be an excellent achiever in the classroom and on the playing field is something that goes unnoticed too often.  This award honors those young men who carry themselves with dignity, integrity and a sense of purpose.  They, like many other students, possess the values cherished in young adults.  We are pleased to identify these individuals, and it will be an honor to recognize them on our playing field this Sunday.”

“On behalf of the IFCA, this is a great opportunity to honor another group of outstanding high school student-athletes around the State of Indiana.  This is what the IFCA is all about, and we thank the coaches and parents who helped shape the lives of these young men,” said Mark A. Miller, athletic director and head football coach at Rochester High School and past IFCA president.  “Everyone I have talked with about this program is excited about the Indianapolis Colts’ participation with high schools.  We look forward to this being a long-lasting mutual relationship.”

Media members are invited to cover Sunday’s press conference.  Reporters and photographers may report to Room 143-4 at 8:00 a.m.  For more information, please call Pam Humphrey at (317) 808-5111.

EVERS, KOVALESKI TO BE HONORED AT NATIONAL ATHLETIC DIRECTORS CONFERENCE

Two individuals with Indiana connections will be among those honored during the 36th annual National Conference of High School Directors of Athletics this weekend in Orlando, Florida.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) will award NFHS Citations to eight high school athletic directors, including Castle High School director of athletics John Evers on December 17. Also being honored are 14 individuals, including Frank Kovaleski, who have made outstanding contributions to interscholastic athletics and have been named recipients of the 2005 Distinguished Service Awards given by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). These individuals will be honored December 18 conducted jointly by the NFHS and the NIAAA.

NFHS Citations are presented annually to outstanding athletic directors in recognition of contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local, state and national levels. State associations nominate athletic directors for NFHS Citations, and the NFHS Board of Directors approves recipients.

Evers has served as the director of athletics at Castle High School in Newburgh since 1994. During his 29-year career as a teacher, coach and athletic director, he has earned great respect and admiration at the local, state and national levels.

Within the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (IIAAA), Evers has served on its board of directors, strategic planning committee and leadership training committee. He has also been the IIAAA president and conference director, liaison to the NIAAA, past president and secretary. In 2005, he received the NIAAA State Award of Merit.

Evers has also been active within the NIAAA, completing 19 leadership training courses and attending nine NFHS national conferences. He has also served as the Indiana delegate to four NIAAA delegate assemblies, and has been a presenter at three national conferences. A member of the NIAAA Publications Committee, Evers has been published in the Interscholastic Athletic Administration (IAA) numerous times.

Prior to becoming athletic director at Castle, Evers was the head football and assistant wrestling coach at South Spencer High School in Rockport. From 1978 to 1990, he served as Castle’s assistant track and field, football, and baseball coach, while teaching life sciences, biology, health and physical education in the district. Evers also taught and coached seventh-grade football and eighth-grade track and field at Castle Junior High School.  Evers received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Evansville (Indiana).

As the former director of the NIAAA, Kovaleski has more than 40 years of experience with high school athletics and administration – 16 of which are with the NIAAA.

The Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to individuals from within the NIAAA membership, as well as those outside the field of athletic administration, in recognition of their length of service, special accomplishments and contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local, state and national levels. Nominations are submitted by state athletic director associations, screened by the NIAAA Awards Committee, and selected by the NIAAA Board of Directors.

As director, Kovaleski developed the NIAAA Leadership Training Program in 1996 and expanded the NIAAA Certification Program in 1999. More than 20,000 Leadership Training Courses have been completed by athletic directors at state, regional and national conferences since the program’s inception, and two additional certification levels – the Registered Athletic Administrator (RAA) and Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA) – have been added to the program.

Kovaleski was instrumental in the addition of a master’s degree in athletic administration through online courses at Ohio University, as well as with the success of the NFHS National Conference of High School Directors of Athletics. In addition, he was responsible for starting the NIAAA Endowment, which has raised $350,000 since its creation.

Before serving his NIAAA position, Kovaleski worked as an athletic director in three Indiana schools – Triton, New Castle and Richmond high schools. He also coached track, football and tennis. A graduate of Bicknell High School, Kovaleski earned his bachelor’s degree in 1963 from Indiana State University, and his master’s in 1969 from St. Francis (Indiana) College.

Prior to becoming NIAAA director, Kovaleski served on the NFHS Athletic Directors Advisory Committee, the NIAAA Resolutions Committee and NIAAA Professional Development Committee. He was president of the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association in 1979-80.
